Does RAM speed matter for Coffee Lake?

So I'm on the hunt for some RAM for the 8700k and I can't decide whether to get 3000Mhz or 3200Mhz. Is there really a big performance gap between the two speeds for Coffee Lake compared to Ryzen? I heard the sweet spot for Ryzen is 3200Mhz.

I was looking at the G-Skill Trident Z RGB 3200Mhz or Corsair Vengeance RGB but they're both out of stock on AmazonUK or just priced high :( So I've started to look for some USED RAM for waaay cheaper on Reddit and people are actually selling them for around £120-£140.

EDIT: btw, RAM prices are f*cking ridiculous right now, WHY.

Thanks,

Sean.

ram speed matters on all platforms

u need to pick the best cas / mhz ratio though

example , 3000 cas 10 would be better then 3200 cas 13 :P

ram speed performance differences are close to falling into margin of error, the thing with ryzen is that its not *really* the ram speed, its that by design a piece of the CPU itself runs at ram speed, and its that piece that provides the notable benefit when going higher ram speeds.

It still matters, but if there's a noticeable price difference between the two go for 3000

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

to add to this: the ram speed determines the speed of the infinity fabric which is what connects the ccx's together (you can have 2 cores on one ccx and 2 on another and if they need to collab on one thing the speed of the infinity fabric really matters)

Just use coffee lakes stock supported frequency of 2666mhz,  anything over that and you get negligible increases vs price. Anything under 2666mhz and you start dropping performance big time on coffee lake. Really high ram speeds over 2666mhz don't give you much because Intel doesn't have a infinity fabric glueing together 2 cpu dies like AMD.

seems like i'll go for 3000 then, unless i find a used one for 3200 then ill go 3200.

3000 and 3200 are the sweet spots for DDR4's pricing, but for $40 I'd choose the 3000MHz kit. RAM matters in plenty of games, but a good reference is Witcher 3. CPU gains are minimal, but RAM gains are quite good stepping up from 2133 to 3000. You'll see more gains on minimums while averages will go up as well due to more being processed and less time wasted.
