I've never seen a slower laptop in my life

TheSuspect

I recently purchased an Asus Rog Gl553 as a secondary pc for trips. I got the varient with the following specs:

- Gtx 1050

- i5 7300Hq

- 1tb 5400rpm hdd

- 8gb ddr4 2133mhz ram

I wasn't expecting it to perform amazingly, but I was hoping it would be able to run light things like Cs:go. Upon receiving the laptop, the first time it booted, it was satisfyingly quicker than my old laptop, in benchmarks and in-game. However, a few days later, (right now) I tried booting it, and I was greeted by the login screen after nearly 4 minutes of loading. I can't even get into my task manager. There's over 800gb of space available. The only things installed are benchmark softwares and Steam along with a few other games. There wasn't any physical trauma with the laptop, but it hangs on literally everything. Chrome won't launch, Windows key is inoperable, and the Asus control panel button doesn't respond. It's gotten to the point where force shut-downs are needed to do anything, not that much can be done either way. It's at the point that the laptop it's replacing is faster than this one.

It's running Win 10 Home is that helps.

Nothing.

I'd check the HDD with CrystakDiskInfo.

Personally I'd reccomend an SSD for a boot drive as HDDs are kinda terrible with newer editions of windows.

well of course its painfully slow - its a 5400 rpm drive

just get a faster drive....either 7200rpm or an SSD

your laptop might even have room for a m.2 based ssd in addition to the 2.5inch

Thing is, this is abnormal, even for a 5400 drive. The older laptop from 2014 with a beat up 5400rpm drive runs faster than it. I don't have the money to replace for an ssd. I need to know if there's a fix or if I need to get my warranty papers together.

Nothing.

Try to reinstall windows, there might be a lot of bloat (you could also check the startup services/programs first). You could also run a SMART test on the current HDD, but I suspect that there is nothing wrong with it.

It's also possible the new laptop just uses a shittier HDD. Not all 5400rpm drives are equal. Oh, and what are the exact specs of the old laptop and new laptop?

i have had a slower laptop, and used it as my daily. first gen atom lol. anyway as many have pointed out the HDD is probably to blame here in one way or another. a reinstall of windows might see you off pretty good or if you can return it thats probably the best option

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

It's not entirely the HDD's fault, it's some bloatware or even possibly Windows background processes. Disable Cortana, and open Task Manager as soon as you can to see what's eating up the disk usage. That's what I have to do after restarting my laptop with an HDD. This is a major shortcoming of Windows 10... SSDs are almost required these days.

I'd personally try just doing a fresh install of Windows so that you don't have any of the bullshit bloatware, and if the problem comes back then it's either Windows raping the poor drive or the drive is already going bad, because not even my old 80GB 5400RPM Hitachi Travelstar is that slow with Windows 10.

IMO Windows 10 and bloatwares are causing these problems

I use a 5400 RPM HDD too. Needs a clean install and some tweaking. Now boot only takes 15-25 secs

Reinstall Windows. I've only seen one preinstalled copy of Windows on a computer that didn't have too many issues.

I would combine what everyone else has suggested by getting an ssd or m.2 to use as a boot drive and make sure you install a fresh copy of windows on that to get rid of any bloatware.

even my 'signature edition' Flex 3 (supposed to have no bloatware) was shit until I reinstalled.
