RIP Keyboard. Replacement Time

Lord Nicoll

Well, I'm anti Razer now, I converted about the time my BlackWidow died, which was 10 minutes ago. The controller chip on the board goes to around 55-70°C, which I'm pretty sure shows that is what died, and sure I could probably replace it if I found one, I might do that, but I'm ready for a new keyboard. Got any suggestions? I'm looking for Cherry MX blue switches, an enclosed design (no super open exposed switch type designs), 105 key ISO format and RGB is not essential. I have avoided it up until now so I'm meh to it. I'm looking at Logitech and Corsair mostly, but anything goes as long as I like it

[current front runner is the Corsair STRAFE with blue switches]

Yours faithfully

55-70 degrees on a controller chip? What the hell is going on in a keyboard for it to output as much heat as a stock CPU at full load?

Oh it's not outputting as much heat energy as a CPU, just the same temperature. That's surface package temp, I used a thermocouple but I have an IR thermometer too if you want confirmation?

i personally love buying whatever cheap one has blue style switches for like $30. I got a rosewill one with green and red backlighting with really cherry switches for like 60 and that's been good too.

Ducky kayboards are pretty hard to find in ISO layout where I am, usually you have to hunt really hard. Is it worth it to find one?

Corsair K70/Strafe/K95

Some Gskill or Cooler master

That's sorta what I've been looking at, so far the STRAFE is a nice basic looking keyboard.

Still seams quite outrageous for a keyboard... O.o

I'd rather not buy a super cheap keyboard, and I'd rather stick to Cherry keys now. I don't like that bad taste in my mouth.

It have to assume the chip is shorting out the 5v rail internally and either the motherboard is limiting the wattage or the PSU just has so much 5v rail ampage it can affords a near short circuit on it.

I own a Logitech G710+ and the similar to Strafe, Corsair K70 LUX (has open design, which after owning a closed designed, open design is the way to go it's so much easier to clean) The K70/Strafe also has per key lighting in software, while the G710 only has WASD and arrow key separate LED dimming. Both keyboards are good though (I use browns personally) I've owned the G710+ for almost three years and the Lux (it's an at work keyboard) for about a year

I really prefer closed design due to soldering and other work near my keyboard, something might fall in. Taking it apart yearly to clean doesn't bother me. Also I think they're REALLY ugly. My desk is a pretty dangerous place for keyboards, mice etc. I'm really supirised it was the microprocessor that died and something else, like a disolved PCB or smashed keys.

That's fair

The G710+ is good, one thing I liked that it included over the K70 LUX was O-rings on the keys, which helped keep the noised down considerably compared to the K70 (it took me a week to figure out the key caps didnt have o-rings and thats why they were so much louder even thought they were the same switch) but like I mentioned, the "dual zone" lighting kinda sucks, especially in an age where most keyboards not have individually dimmable keys, which can also switch profiles based on program or games. If none of that matters, the G710+ is a solid option.

That's a good sales pitch, While I don't think the G710+ is that great looking, it's how it types that really matters.

Oh no they do have UK layout boards, that just isn't one and I can't find any, it's probably mainly sold in store. Overclockers.co.uk and scan.co.uk don't have any, I'll have to keep looking

Absolutely. But they are usually not hard to find if you are willing to buy online. Quite a few of them actually.

Some have mentioned DAS and if you can try to go some other route. DAS has sadly dropped in quality in the last few years. They are atill better than most choices, but not what they used to be.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.
