@WhisperingKnickers Had his SR-2 in an S340 for a while lmao. There was a lot of cutting involved considering like I mentioned, the mobo is basically as large as the case itself

i'm getting the vibe that affording a case is more of the issue than finding one?

Both. Only cases currently sold that fit HPTX out of the box are some from Anidees on Amazon, availability fluctuates and they're $270 or so.

I do have a mobo tray I can bolt to a board of plywood I have lol, currently my XL-ATX tray is on there (because I also don't have cases that support the monstrocity that is my X58 Classified 4-Way SLI - it's as tall as the SR-2, just not as wide). But ye olde lack of motivation to do much other than eat, look at meme comps, and stomp demons in DOOM when I get home.

Lmao. Don't think anything has been HPTX since the SR-X though, which was 2x LGA2011 (and sadly not OCable ).

I think SSI CEB and then some more custom boards for specific server offerings from large OEMs. As far as standard form factors I think CEB is the biggest in use. That or XL-ATX, XL-ATX is a really fucked standard that ranges from tall EATX to tall CEB. And for that matter, EATX ranges from just wide ATX to actual EATX. Those two are really weird standards.

Reading all the way to the end of the build-log I'm up to 512GB of RAM. 8x64GB DIMMs.

So I'm at a loss so far, and can't figure out how to get this DUET stuff working. I've tried 3 different usb keys. I can get DUET usb to boot into the boot loader, and whether I use REFIND or not, nothing will boot the secondary USB key to install Windows 10.

The USB key for Windows 10 is working because I've just booted a laptop with it that I need to reinstall Windows on. My motherboard detects the USB keys as HDD Mass Storage devices, not as removable devices, so not sure if that has anything to do with it.

When I go into the Boot Manager, none of the devices boot, they all display "Boot Failed. <Device Name>"

The motherboard is the EVGA X58 SLI LE. Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Interestingly, if I boot directly to the Win10 USB installer, it does see the NVMe but says Windows can't be installed on drive 0 partition 1. Under details:

Windows cannot be installed on this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.

I'm assuming this is part of what DUET does, is provide a logical controller for the NVMe that the Windows installer will recognize in order to allow the OS to be installed.

Interestingly after doing some forum reading, its recommended to not use the GUI for preparing the DUET USB. Using the command line as Administrator and only doing FORMAT, DUET, REFIND options (using safe removal when prompted) makes everything work seamless. Windows 10 is now installing on the NVMe!

Sounds like work...

Perhaps my topic is less specific to the socket/chipset and more about virtualization specifically. If the forum has a thread specific to virtualization I've never seen it. May be willing to start one of those. Can't say it would get much traffic though.

I'd suggest you message @TopHatProductions115, he knows more than I do about virtualization and X79.

Oh believe me we've been talking. I'm more interested in the general discussion of it, I don't have any questions. For me it'd be the C602/C612 chipsets but yeah, X79/X99.

 

Once I complete my next Tutorial I may start a General Virtualization discussion thread. If it stays alive great, if it dies oh well. The LTT forum doesn't have a great server/networking/virtualization following.
