I mean, a SUPERIOR motherboard may fix your x58 woes, failing that i’d Probably buy it from you when I haven’t just bought a cpu cooler

Superior BOIS yes. At least assuming it's the same BIOS as the Rampage III Formula I started with.

Hardware wise the only board I have worse is my X58 Micro. All the others are competitors for the Rampage III Extreme or out of its league.

Speaking of Bad Decision Dinosaur....

someone save me from myself and buy this plz. SR-2 for $325.

So tempted. But then need a $500 PSU, $300 case to fit the BigBoi, $lots in water cooling ("need"), $70 in CPU, $ram, plus a bunch of GPUs to do 4 gamer 1 tower, and then deal with EVGA's notoriously broken virtualization support.

Please, please buy it so I don't. I want to yolo it but my brain is telling me to try not being dumb. Especially when, objectively, could just swap out my R5 for the R9 and party with all the cores and no PCIe lanes that way.

What if both?

If I get my hands on some X79 and X299 then my ascension to modern Intel godhood will be complete!

I believe there were prior X chipsets but for the pre-on CPU IMC days and such.

R3E > Sabertooth. R3F > Sabertooth as well AFAIK. Sabertooth boards are usually solid, but Rampage ones are the flagship line. The R3F is excellent, the R3E is the highest tier board ASUS created for the X58 chipset AFAIK.

My X58 Classy SLI 3x would be an R3E competitor, and the Classy 4-Way is the big version of that, and then the SR-2 - being a dual socket OCable Intel 5520 board - is in its own league entirely.

I gotta get out my SR-2 sometime again reeeeeee. Need to actually get a case for it, but I'm looking at cases for my SLI 4-way too.

I did get the $500 (well, $420 now) PSU for only $180 though, 1600W T2 brand new off an EVGA sale on the tail end of the mining craze (T2s were hella popular among miners apparently, I assume it was overstock) though. I don't know of any good alternatives that are reasonably priced. ?

We could even be WC bros, that's something I've got to get for my SR-2 if I get it running again (I do have the chipset/VRM blocks for it already tho).

Still, it wouldn’t hurt to see if EVGA is doing a funky BIOS (although could be spectre and meltdown related) and again, I could be pretty easily convinced to buy it from you at cost. (There is of course the gamble that it doesn’t work, but eh. Yolo.) I just realized that I am doing a terrible job of talking you down from buying

I haven't updated them since I had stuff behaving on them tho so maybe it's my own intelligence that degraded. ?

Spectre/Meltdown don't affect clocks that I've seen. Just performance in OS.

Ha yea, I kinda want one just to tinker with. I also...might want to buy your WC stuff if you don't want it. If I buy the SR2. Which I shouldn't. But I wanna.

There are a couple of the T2s on ebay for reasonable prices, but a used PSU kinda weirds me out. The Corsair 1600 also is a smidge shorter, which could come in handy for cases.

not like I've been researching or anything...........I should just yolo and make an offer.

If you do have the free cash, hell yeah. Even to just wall mount it lol, they're impressive looking boards.

Given I main a WCed rig and the blocks I have are black acetal (my faves) chances are I wouldn't sell unless I decide I'll never actually get the SR-2 going (given my current track record for actually completing anything that wouldn't be too surprising). ?

WC hardware being expensive AF since I don't feel comfortable going for cheapo/knockoff stuff is another addition to that argument tho. My current loop is around $775 by my calculations, including only what's in the rig ?

Enthusiasts rly do be like that. IIRC @Damascus is still struggling with whether to keep his 6950X when a newer CPU would be both cheaper (especially given that 6950Xs still sell for a shit ton) and easier to stuff in a tiny case and easier to cool...

But muh enthusiasm bro

Yea....I just sent a best offer for the SR-2. We'll see if seller takes it. Didn't @WhisperingKnickers also have SR-2 WC parts?

that's where I got mine. ?

IIRC he's been looking at getting new stuff though, I don't know if he'd be down to sell his SR-2 or not? May be worth an ask.

Lmao, I've so far succeeded in not doing much all with my truck, thanks to 1) not being able to afford both that and PCs (probably for the best) and 2) I do actually quite like it stock, it mostly needs a refresh since it's an 18 year old vehicle at this point. Oh and I need to get back into cycling - both since I used to love that, and for my health - this spring/summer. Have you seen how expensive that shit will get though? Eyes what are IIRC $300+ rims... ?

And I need moar rigs sitting around my already cluttered place because I can't use all of them at once but they're too power hungry to run any compute stuff 24/7

He did.
that's where I got mine.

Ahhhh gotcha! We'll see if I get the board before I try to convince you to sell haha.

Yea, cycling....looking at an ebike to make my commute not take so long and to not guzzle all the gas with the street car. Jeeeeezus nice ones are $$$. I love my road bike but 2hrs of riding to work and back kinda kills the day.

HPTX mobo for an HTPC, makes sense. They have 3 of the same letters!

And yeah ofc it's gotta be watercooled for silence, don't want a noisy HPTX HTPC.

Does HP make HP HPTX HTPC cases?

You could get this for $145: https://www.quietpcusa.com/Cubitek-HPTX-ICE-Computer-Case-P923.aspx

Then have an HPTX ICE HPTX HTPC ?
