SNES Mini is just an updated NES Mini?

This games should now be public domain and be free to play on some raspery pi or something like that, the big corporations got so it never happens anymore. There is the story of Disney they used lots of public domain works to do some of their movies, and then did everything they could to change the laws so now nothing gets to public domain.

Besides they could easily sell a SNES controller that worked with the Switch and made all this games work on Switch. F'ing money grabbing scheme. Than they get amazed there are pirates.

I don't think that you quite understand how that all works.  While a work can be public domain, it's performance or version made new can be copyrighted.

He did not say that everything Disney made based on public domain stories should also be public domains. 

 

What he said was that Disney are hypocrites because their built their media empire on public domain stories, and now they are trying their hardest to make sure copyright never runs out and no new material becomes public domain. 

 

They are trying to kill the system that made them famous to begin with.

Actually, their main concern is Mickey Mouse, which was an original creation.  It's always been the approaching public domain era of the earliest Mickey Mouse works that motivates Disney.

 

But then it's also critical to considder how the situation is different.  If you look at most works that are public domain, they are not just 'old' but rather that no entities in existence who could still receive profits from these works even if they weren't public domain.  Everyone is dead and companies are long dissolved.

 

Disney on the other hand, they still exist, they still produce works based on 75 year old Characters, and even continue to re release old works.

 

That said, your cries are specifically an American concern.  Where I live, everything that Disney made prior until 1966 is public domain.

Im happy Nintendo has made these. I just hope they make enough so scalpers stop making out like bandits. Its nice that I have an option to legally own Earthbound for $80. Assuming they make enough. That game alone makes it worth it

Not sure what your point is. Yes they are specifically worried about mickey Mouse, but the result of their continued lobbying for extensions to copyright they are also ruining the chances of other copyrighted works becoming public domain.

Yes, most things that are public domain these days are very old things where the creators or entities who used to profit from them are long dead. That's because Disney has been extending the copyright to absurd lengths for almost 100 years now. Back in the old days of proper copyright law, the copyright ended after 14 or 28 years. Back in the day creators frequently were still alive and making money from their creations when copyright ran out. That's not the case anymore because of Disney.

 

I really don't see how you can try to make the argument that we need longer copyright today because companies exist and create stories based on characters for longer. Are you really going to say that Walt Disney needs exclusive rights more than some poor creators back in the old day where copyright would run out while they were still alive?

Um, that's because all the NES is doing is emulating an NES system to play the ROMs anyway? Nintendo has basically taken a customized RaspberryPi, thrown on a linux OS with a custom interface, and pre-loaded it with certain ROMs. No different than what anyone could already do with their own RaspberryPi, however, it's a hell of a lot more convenient for most people than a do-it-yourself solution.

Like, that makes no sense.  There's a bajillion boards out there running cheap ARM chips, the Raspberry Pi is just an evolution of that, but that doesn't make the Mini NES or Mini SNES an evolution or custom Raspberry Pi, they're just further evolutions from a huge range of boards running ARM chips.

You're spot on - technically the iPhone is also just a phone running on a cheap ARM chip too. I was merely using the RaspberryPi as most people are more familiar with that than if I had said "cheap ARM-based SoC" so it made it easier to describe.

What I think is amazing is how you believe that you are accurately able to predict the decisions and votes that will be made by Canadian Parliament.  This is something that most parliamentarians wish that they could do.  Have you considerred selling your abilities to them?

I have not tried selling it yet. What do you think would be a reasonable price and do you have the contact information for some people interested in my services? 

 

But seriously, I am not predicting how votes will go. I am just looking at how some politicians in Canada are trying to extend copyright law by doing things such as sneaking it into budget bills. If they keep doing shady things like that then don't be surprised if they one day managed to get something passed. 

Besides, Canada already agreed to extending copyright to 70 years after the author's death when you signed TPP, so clearly it is not out of the question. Than God that horrible trade agreement died.

 

Canada is currently doing slightly better than other countries, but if you're not on your guard it won't stay that way for long.

But it'd make no sense if that were the case.  Compared to the guts of a NES Mini or SNES Mini, the Raspbery Pi is actually really expensive.  It has a lot of chip functions that one would ever need that only add to cost.  Using Pis for anything in mass production is, simply, stupid.  In contrast, Nintendo, which already has many contracts for large scale mass production of electronics from the likes of FoxConn and others, can basically go and get some unremarkable ARM board with no more features than they need produced in the millions of of units for very little money.

 

I get that to a lot of people, the Pi seems 'cheap', but in terms of manufacturing, it's actually fairly expensive compared to having the ability to spin up your own assembly line.

I'm not surprised by this, neither the NES nor the SNES require a lot of horsepower to emulate and with Nintendo planning to re-run the NES Mini it's only economical for them to build them upon the same hardware. 

 

They're also a little overpriced for what they are - if you compare it to how much more you can do with a RaspberryPi. But then again, they're collector's items whil the RPi is not.

I know. I was just saying that, as people were paying leechers hundreds for something that has existed for a long time for $30 too. You can also buy a mini NES case from Amazon for a Pi for $11.

I think a N64 mini would be about the extend they could squeeze out of these.

wouldn't it be more interesting for Nintendo to create a working emulator on the Switch that supported their old consoles? stop being greedy  with the power of the switch it would be really easy to emulate all consoles up to N64 at least. This release of a specific console after another is just Nintendo being greedy and folks being gullible. Or at least release a console that plays NES, SNES, N64,... games, like i think atari will do (if i understand correctly)
