How to migrate to SSD?

King_of_Oz

HEY!

I just received a Samsung 960 EVO 500GB M.2 SSD as an early birthday present. My current Drive setup is this:

HDD 1: PRIMARY. On here is my windows install and all of my files (Steam games, Software, Pictures, etc.)

HDD 2:

Partiton 1: About 1GB of game assets.

Partiton 2: Emulators and emulation-related stuff.

Samsung 960 EVO 500GB M.2 SSD: Nothing yet.

How do I take my windows install and some of the contents of HDD 1 and migrate it to the SSD?

All Help Appreciated!!!

Since I am to lazy to put something interesting here, I will put everything, but slightly abbreviated. Here is everything:

You should do a clean install to avoid problems.

I'm thinking of moving my windows install to a M.2 SSD also, I found this but I'm not sure if it works, so I came here to see if anyone has tested it

After isntalling windows on the HDD you can just plug your HDD in, move the files you want to keep to the SSD or another HDD, then format the HDD and move your files back.

for stuff like this there are programs that clone the contents of a storage drive and ''copy'' it to another storage drive. you cannot just go into windows file manager and copy windows install to ssd. that will not work.

others who know good free programs that do that please reply to him.

doing a clean install doesn't sound terrible, just annoying as I'll have to reset a bunch of stuff

but is there an easier way to copy a bunch of the settings (like startup programs, desktop background+icons, etc.) over from an old install to a new one? or are my hopes too high?

You might be able to have that stuff save by using a microsoft account:

use Macrium Reflect to clone the contents of your windows drive to ssd. google it yourself how to use it.

Don't clone windows...

You're going to end up having a ton of system problems, updates that fail to install, drivers that won't work, etc etc etc.

In the end you will have to clean install windows a few months from now anyway to get things fixed (if your PC even boots after cloning).

Also it is NOT good to clone from a HDD to an SSD because the OS can still detect it as a HDD and perform cleaning functions on it that should not be done to SSDs.

Even WD strongly discourages cloning, especially to SSDs.

Stop telling people to make stupid decisions.

You've giving me more work because I will have to help him fix his broken PC 2 months from now when it gets stuck in "repairing windows" or one of the other hundred problems caused by cloning.

Seriously, go to google and do some research on all the problems caused by cloning drives. It is the lazy and improper way of doing things.

I didn't call him stupid, but the action of cloning windows is.

There are millions of forum topics on google from people asking for help because windows is screwed up after cloning.

We can avoid increasing that by clean installing instead of cloning.
