Server PSUs in general are better than consumer ones, in terms on reliability and not killing your components.

I don't have first hand experience but don't server PSU fans just run at 100% all the time? Even if I'm wrong considering it's size isn't it a high pitch wining? I think it'd be very annoying for home theatre.

its really not that loud, maybe like a 120mm fan running medium speed :)

FSP Group has an ATX Redundant Power Supply out on the market. Not sure how good it is, but the best part about it is, as I've mentioned, ATX, so it'll fit into any case that takes ATX power supplies already. But since you've hacked up the case and made it work, it's there. Just a reminder next time or if you're at all curious.

https://www.amazon.com/FSP-Module-Swappable-Redundant-Digital/dp/B072WHHL7F/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1506055334&sr=1-1&keywords=FSP+Group+Redundant+Power+Supply

As for how loud their fans are, my school has a BOXX RenderPro rendering node, and it is equipped with a Seasonic server power supply due to its form factor, and its fan is not all that loud. The whole system becomes loud when it renders something, I've tested it.

That looks interesting :) Although I'd probably want a quiet fan in a server PSU in a desktop case I was using. :P

I'd like to be able to put a server motherboard in a desktop case some day :D without voiding the warranty due to modding the case. :)

For example, something like an 8-socket-SP3 version of one of these:

In one of these:

At least four of these,:

One of these for each CPU and GPU die, VRM, VRAM/DRAM, etc,:

About 4 or more of these,:

Four or so of these,:

Enough of these to populate all SATA ports (including 4-way splits from SAS on the card above) and drive bays (adding extra hot-swap bays if there's fewer of those than ports),:

Seagate-60TB-SSD.jpg?resize=1000,625&ssl

Without needing one of these to house it all. :P

2-socket Epyc server boards are ridiculous enough. Supermicro already has boards with up to 32 DIMMs split across two CPUs.

I'm also sure that AMD has limited the socket count to 2, given that they're physically large as they are, and having 8 of them is physically impossible with current hardware. You'll need a ridiculously large server board in a proprietary form factor.

Plus to fit those in a tower chassis, you're going to have to go custom.

And that's the disadvantage of server PSU in a Desptop.

Aside from that, nothing wrong with it.
Well, if it fits of course...

There are about two dozen different specification.

and always check if you really have an ATX compatible Server PSU and not something like ATX GES, WTX and other non ATX compatible shit...

YA AGREED, THIS STUPID NEX B1 IS ALSO SO LOUD but I shouldn't be shouting since my computer is presently broken.

To be honest, I've used a 5€(!!) Server PSU a couple of Months/weeks/years.

Need to mod one of the connectors though. And it wasn't that annoying.

Was a 460W NMB by the way. (yeah, NMB, the Fan Guys aka Minebea)....
