They're less common but they do exist.

 

Sure SSDs still cost much more than HDD on a per GB basis but what's cool is they've finally got to the point where the "base size" of each (128 GB SSD and 1 TB HDD) cost the same, so if you're not going to need much capacity anyway, it actually doesn't cost any more than it already would have to make that jump up from a HDD to an SSD

Lol, in my school the internet is out a lot so that wouldnt really help. The internet was out 2/3 of my current ddp classes so thats cool.

My high school runs iMacs in Animation class. I used the iMac model (The ones with the metal bodies, ODD slots, and 1394 FireWire ports) from like 2009-2010, and they were absolute garbage; they will slow down when you create epically large scenes (in the GB range complete with materials, textures, lights, and tons of animations).

 

When my brother entered the class, they upgraded to the much newer ones from around 2013. Similar story.

 

Bottom line: Don't use an iMac for this kind of workload. You're better off using a high-performance Windows desktop, or if you love macOS so much, a Mac Pro instead. And both need separate monitors and peripherals, so don't complain.

My brother claims that he made Cinema 4D (The software the class uses mostly) crash on one of them. Plus when rendering, they take forever (Like 48+ hours for around several hundred to a thousand framers at 24 FPS) for such a small scene with the aforementioned contents.

Haha, you guys and your i7s, at my school, we have core 2 duos! Besides that, our newest computer systems are laptops with 3rd generation core i5s.

Now obviously if you're doing 3D modelling you actually need good hardware, but the majority of computers could be Pentiums with 4 GB and it would be fine.

Doesn't a lot of security software for education rely on vPro at this point though? Thought that's why you frequently see i5s paired with crappy hardware?

The Computing Science labs in my institution were just kitted out two years ago with Dell UltraSharp 27 U2717D displays and 47705 powered OptiPlex 9020 towers, replacing the older Precision T7400 towers. All of the other systems which are accessible to all students have also been upgraded recently from OptiPlex 730 SFF with 4:3 monitors, to 3040 series and 24" Ultrasharps.

Disclaimer: both parents work in Edjumucation.

 

The Edjumucation sector gets discounts anywhere from 1% to 100%, depending on who you deal with. Last year, during the summer, my dad and I basically rebuilt the Physics department at his school (technological highschool). When it came to computing it turned out that we could apply for funding right from the MoE (Ministry of Edjumucation) which has partnership with big-wig companies (Dell, Lenovo, Microsoft and so on). We managed to secure a contract of sorts which provided 18 HEDT rigs that are intended for use in the Physics, Chem and Bio departments (so, 6 for each science department). The rough math I did at the time put each rig at around $7000 (which includes peripherals, monitors and a projector). The school itself paid a grand total of $0.

These are dual quadro/dual Xeon rigs with all the bells and whistles (and they kinda sound like jet engines once you get into high resource computing). It's funny that most of the professors (at least in Bio) have no idea how to use them and they just gather dust (although I do believe the CS dept. ninja'd a couple units from Bio).

 

Meanwhile my old Faculty (Computer Science) had 1st gen i5s with 4 gigs of ram and no dedicated GPU rigs that were "general purpose". Assembler was being taught on the same rigs the Modeling course was taught on, so you get the idea.

My school's engineering lab had i7-6700s, 16gb of 2400Mhz RAM, and some Quadro card. They took forever to boot, though.

my school has a odd mix, the multimedia classes have 2010 mac pros, quad core xeons, 12gb of ram, hd 5770 with fiber cards going to a 100tb server. There are 4 other computer labs 3 with iMacs and 1 with core 2 duo windows machines. CAD is on quad core xeons with quadros (not sure which one) and 16gb of ram. 

The special room is broadcasting where we got a really odd mix, 2 of the same mac pros, 1 tricaster 410, 1 tricaster mini and 1 stream something, plus 2 laptops. 

Teachers range from core 2 duo machines up to MBP and MBA. 

So yeah my high school has a odd mix.

Yea unfortunately those towers usually don't come with SSDs even spec'd out. They also often use a management framework that helps with deployment services and updates which prolongs boot times even longer.

Our school loans us out laptops. Last year we got Dell Latitudes with i5 5200us, 8gb ram, 129gb SSD.... 

New students this year get i3s.  

The laptops work for school, but they're locked down af so you can't do much else (they're probably keylogging this, to be honest)...

How the he'll was YouTube blocked on the optiplexes running Windows, but not on the iMacs? I should also say we used the iMacs in a video production like class, but still... they were on the same network.
