MAKE WIFI Router To a WIFI ADAPTER

Hello. this is going to be wired but is it possible to make a router into a WiFi adapter. that can get internet for a AP. and connect directly to my computer.

Huh? So put it in extend/bridge mode and plug an ethernet cord into your PC?

i think he means plug directly into his computer via USB or something and use it like a USB/PCIE wifi card.

I don't think you can, and there's no reason to. It'll do the exact same thing lugged in with an ethernet cable, and I don't really know of any PC towers or older laptops without and ethernet jack.

Not sure exatly what you mean, but from what I understand you want to do something similar to what I have done in my secondary house. Basically I have a router that connects over WiFi to my neighour's router and my PC is connected to my router via ethernet. So my router basically works similarly to a WiFi adapter. I did it using DD-WRT on the router.

You'd have to find a Wi-Fi router that has a repeater mode, like in some models of Apple's Airport Wi-Fi routers.

according to him, he wants it like a actual wifi card. Like on a laptop where you can select the network from the internet software

That's what I use to extend the wifi to my room, an older AirPort Express I got from my uncle.

i just use my ISP router because it's so great

What router are you using then? You have to check if it's compatible with DD-WRT software and if it is you have to flash the firmware on your router with DD-WRT firmware. You have to be careful though so you don't brick your router. Then with a few settings it'll work.

well it a extra router i bout a month ago, it a netgear wnr2020 dual band 2.4ghz

Well it's supported according to the website. Just search the model and it'll show up http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database

But you have to check if your router is v1, since it only supports that if it's newer, it might not work.

Its called Wireless Bridging. Yes you can do it. Not all routers support this. If the router in question is compatible with DDWRT then you can do it. Besides that its a toss up if it will work. I have done this before, so I know it can work.
