Should your GPU meet an untimely demise what's the first thing you have on hand to fill its void until you can repair it / purchase a new one?

To fill in for my RX 460 I've got my Intel HD graphics of my i5 3450. Beyond that I have the option of two "low profile" cards, an HD 8350 or a Quadro NVS card of some kind.

I'd probably move my GTX 670 around if I lost a card.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Besides not being able to play much of anything well at 1080p , let alone 4k, it worked alright. Just got my 3rd 980ti back and so far so good.

Should my 1070 go the way of the dodo, I have a GTX 980 Ti, GTX 770, and a GTX 560 Ti to fall back on. Technically, I have a spare 1070, but that is used by someone else. I also have a 1080 Ti on the way on the 31st that I ended up getting for about $500 (thanks Dell) so I suppose by then, my 1070 will be added to that list of "backup" GPU's.

I have never really tested the iGPU's on my CPU's. My 6700k's iGPU had bad artifacts (probably due to my extreme torture of the entire system agent subsection) but I suppose I could test this 7700k's iGPU to see if it will work. Would also be interesting to see what my memory overclocking does for performance on the iGPU.

My (incomplete) memory overclocking guide:

Damn 3rd 980ti? I've honestly had good luck with most GPUs from either side of the aisle. The only exception is the GTX 500 series card from my old alienware X51 that died on me after ~2 years of service. The i5 from that Alienware is the very same CPU I still run to this day.

Back when I was running the RX 470 in my old machine, my fallback card was an R9 270X, which I gave away to a friend so he could actually game.  Then I sold the 470 and the only card I had on-hand was my old HD6850.

There is no fallback for my new machine, unless I want to buy another used Fury.

SFF-ish:  Ryzen 5 1600X, Asrock AB350M Pro4, 16GB Corsair LPX 3200, Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro -75mV, 512gb Plextor Nvme m.2, 512gb Sandisk SATA m.2, Cryorig H7, stuffed into an Inwin 301 with rgb front panel mod.  LG27UD58.

Aging Workhorse:  Phenom II X6 1090T Black (4GHz #Yolo), 16GB Corsair XMS 1333, RX 470 Red Devil 4gb (Sold for $330 to Cryptominers), HD6850 1gb, Hilariously overkill Asus Crosshair V, 240gb Sandisk SSD Plus, 4TB's worth of mechanical drives, and a bunch of water/glycol.  Coming soon:  Bykski CPU block, whatever cheap Polaris 10 GPU I can get once miners start unloading them.

MintyFreshMedia:  Thinkserver TS130 with i3-3220, 4gb ecc ram, 120GB Toshiba/OCZ SSD booting Linux Mint XFCE, 2TB Hitachi Ultrastar.  In Progress:  3D printed drive mounts, 4 2TB ultrastars in RAID 5.

I donated my EVGA 760 FTW to my girlfriend's rig when I got my 1060 for Christmas; I'd probably just take it back and let her go back to her APU. Outside of that, apparently my CPU has an iGPU so I guess I'd use that in a worst-case.

Well, I have a 780 as a main GPU.  If that were to (god hopefully it doesn't) die, I did have a GTX 680 to fall back on, but I just gave that to my mom for the gaming PC I'm making her.

That leaves either an HD 6770 or GTX 460 SE until I could get a new.

I have a working 950 on another rig (will turn that into an HTPC) a 290x that boots and manages a few hours of up time without much stress before it craps out (with stress it craps out immediately) and a GTX 260 that thermal throttles but again, boots fine and goes into windows fine.

I also have a working 750 on another rig (My sister's) so I say I have plenty lying around should I need to diagnose something.

because i hand my old cards down to whoever in the family is the next in line with an even weaker card, the only spares i have on hand that are not currently in use are pretty old or potato AF

i can ask my brothers and they would probably let me "borrow back" their cards but if i'd need a somewhat gaming capable card RIGHT NOW, a GTS 250 would be the best card i can put in my system at a moments notice - but then i'd have to swap out my PSU as well because the 350W seasonic in my tower does not even have a single 6 pin and is probably too weak to handle the GTS 250 anyways.

good thing i keep a spare 500W-ish PSU or two around (though they are not seasonic quality)

Should the 980Ti in my main system die, I would most likely steal the 1070 FE from my VR system in the first instance. I don't like using it in my main, as the fan noise is quite noticeable. I have another 980Ti in another watercooled system, so extracting that would not be trivial and as a reference card, it also would be noisy. Next down the line is an EVGA 970 which is pretty decent but I bought it a bit late in product cycle so never really used it in anger. Should that be unavailable I can still go on to a 1060 3GB. Unfortunately I got a short card and basically the cooler on it is wholly inadequate. It thermally throttles if you so much as look at it with visible light in the area. So... yeah, I'm not short on GPUs.
