Sell my FX 6300 for a Fx 8 or 9?

I have wanted to get into vr for a long time, and now with the lower prices i was thinking i would be able to get one at Christmas. Although i dont really think my computer is cut out for it. i know the 970 should be able to play most games, but I dont know if the fx 6300 will handle it. I know i should probably get an i5, but then i would have to get a new mobo and ram, then i could not get vr. I would sell my FX 6300 and then buy a used FX 8320,8350,9590? I dont know if a 212 can handle a 9590, but you can buy them for about the same price of the 8350...

Would it be worth it to upgrade or would the upgrade not be worth my time and money?

FX 9000 series really quires either dual tower heat sinks or water cooling, I don't if the FX 8300 series is rated for VR, might be, and not that many boards can support the FX9000 series without bursting into fire, look for a Ryzen 1400 if your budget would allow it or maybe a locked haswel i5 since it too uses DDR3.

Yours faithfully

Depending on budget, you're better off with either an 8000-series CPU or a new Ryzen 5 1600 (non-x, add some OC and you're golden; plus the non-x comes with a stock heatsink which is pretty decent, while the 1600x doesn't come with any cooling solution)

Get ryzen. If you live near a microcenter you can get it super cheap. I mean my r7 with the board was 340. But getting the R5 1600 would be less than 300 for both even if you don't live near a microcenter. (Or in Canada, where this pricing doesn't mean a thing lol)

I have had an AMD FX 8320 for years and last month I upgraded to an Intel Core I7 7700 and the difference is staggering

I would suggest you move over to Intel for VR

(doesn't need to be an I7, I5 will be just as good for VR)

it may cost a little more but its so worth it in the long run

AMD CPU's are great for budget gaming builds but not for high end and VR, they just run so hot and unstable, also remember the FX series is like 6 years old now

p.s. I have been AMD CPU's my whole life but now I see why people swear by Intel for their CPU's, especially if you are using Nvidia GPU's (i have a GTX 970 and its flying atm)

from what I read at the moment going 2 Gens down won't lose you much performance but will save you quite a bit of money

only thing is no future proofing but id defo recommend an old Intel over a new AMD

just have a look at some I5 benchmarks for this vs 2 gens back, you will see that the newer ones win but not by a lot

haswell is fine, kayb and skylake are only very small performance bumps. 4770(k) and 4790(k) are still some of the best gaming CPUs.

what the fuck are you saying? Ryzen is a great high-end option for gaming, work, VR, etc. and temps are fine. Stability is an issue with any new platform.

And what is this bs about intel working well with Nvidia? Intel-radeon, intel-geforce, amd-radeon, and amd-geforce are all valid and equally powerful when equipped with the same GPU. Stop please.

haswell is fine, kayb and skylake are only very small performance bumps.

Stop please.

aaaaaaaaaand finally Ryzen is a more worthwhile long-term investment as >4 cores become more useful in games

Ok dude calm down I'm just sharing my opinions here

Talking about the years I spent with AMD

I've had AMD for the last 10+ years and the CPU's have worked fine but always ran hot and get super unstable when overclocked after a few years (in my experience)

I know any GPU will work with any CPU but most of the time people tend to pair up

Intel and Nvidia

AMD and AMD

just speaking from experiences, no need to go, nuts dude
