I think it is a great combo. AAA games cant run at 1440p @60HZ when using a 1070.

yeah tell me about it. I think matching a GPU that is one tier up than your monitor is the best idea. 

WHy isn't a 1080 cut it for you nowadays? That's already a pretty huge jump.

I am guilty of this, but instead of being with tech its guitars. I spent a bit too much for my unskilled ass.

I wouldn't say I go overkill, but rather prepare for if I suddenly want to add something to my system that requires another 150w or something like that and I always try to get performance that is 20-30% better than what I actually need right now, because you never know if suddenly this new software you need to use require more than what you are currently using

Plus I have always felt it was stupid to buy something that meets your requirements now, but might not do in a year or two.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

yeah probably i mean im not overkill by truely enthusiast standards but its still more than i need since i rarely game anymore and my machine has basically become a coding tool. to be clear im still gonna go overkill with my upgrade for those rare occasions where i do game. i dont really see a problem with it. its a hobby like any other and thats what hobbys do. eat money that could have been spend "wisely" otherwise.

"You know it'll clock down as soon as it hits 40°C, right?" - "Yeah ... but it doesnt hit 40°C ... ever  😄"

GTA V Runs at 50 FPS and other games I never get 144 FPS unless it isn't that demanding.

the only tricky bit is to differentiate when you loose interest in a hobby. are you really still that into it or are you continuing because you have always done it. letting go of a hobby is a cruel realization.

also system building for me at least is not about bragging about having the biggest rig. its about making it the way i want it. e.g. im going to get vega. i dont care that its not the fastest i dont even care if its a worse bang for buck situation than nvidia. i want freesync and the most power i can get with that. so yeah. do i need all that power ? probably not . probably id be fine with a 480 or whatever the f*ck they call it now but i want vega and if you can afford it by yourself thats enough reason. no need for justifications

Yeah...I think everyone does this in some of their hobbies. I do this in almost everything I do. I always go a bit overboard. I guess it is better to be safe than sorry. I put together a powerful PC more than I need just because I want access to the power if i need it. And I do need it sometimes. I bought a Scott Scale 35 mountain bike back in 2007 with all Shimano XT parts and Fox shock absorbers. I do drive off road some times but not nearly enough to justify the OP bike, Bought a record player that is way better than what I need for my records. It is just that I don't trust products that are way too cheap...not to say they are not good but there are always compromises that companies make in products so that they can be cheaper. And I don't like compromises in products I buy unless it is something that isn't really very important

It's funny because the more money I have, the less overkill are the things I buy. Or maybe that's completely unrelated and I'm just growing up and learning how to spend my money... or maybe that's why I have more money... Geez I don't know, I'll vote Nope.

When I got my PC I was planning to get an i7 4790K. Then decided against it and got an i5 4690. I still regret not getting the i7. :( But the i5 is still going strong. Rendering videos is not the best but there's nothing I can do... :/

Even for VMware it can be a pain.

One thing I always wanted is to not stop gaming even if I was busy, I know it sounds childish but... That's what I wanted and still want. The thing is now I don't care that much about what kind of game I play or where I play it, I feel good jumping from Overwatch to Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer to Shadow Tactics to RIVE to Wonferful 101. A few months ago I sold my rig (i7 4700k GTX970) and bought a Razer Blade so I could work and play whenever and wherever I want. Not so good graphics and FPS (I'd love to get a laptop with 120hz one of these days...), but now I can play even more!

 

BTW, I recommend Shadow Tactics to anyone that likes Commando or even any RTS.

 

P.D. I just want to be clear. When I was a kid I was really awful at buying things, in the meaning that I'd save money to buy something waaay overkill for me. One of the worst purchases I did was saving 2 years to buy a Logitech keyboard that I didn't need nor used and ended up breaking doing I don't even remember what. Maybe I was so intensively stupid in those days that I cleaned up my system forever!

I was the opposite. I had a i7-4770 and I regret getting it. Cos it was overkill for me. I wish I had a core i5 and a more powerful GPU. 

A few months ago I sold everything and surprisingly the i7 hold up its value really great. I sold it at its 68% price point which means I was using it for 5 years and it cost me only 32% of its price. xD Great deal! 

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.
