Is this a 6 pin connector?

Firestar3836
Go to solution Solved by loculus,

Yeah, lower-left and upper-right being square is definitely it. It's keyed that way so it can't be plugged in the wrong way (unless one were to really force it like an idiot).

I wouldn't worry about using that power supply.

btw while you're at it, if this is an HP system, make sure the case actually physically fits the card too. I'm not saying you did, but occasionally people forget that.

Hi im looking to upgrade from my GTX 745 to a 1060. The only thing im not sure about is if my power supply can support it. Sorry for the bad phone camera quality been holding on to my 5s till the pixel 2 or iphone 8, which ever one comes on top.IMG_0746.thumb.JPG.b177c44cb80be1e0cef613b8b568f1df.JPG

That looks like a 6 pin, yes. Do you know the model of PSU that you have?

That's definitely a 6 pin, like Frosty asked, what PSU do you have? 1060 doesn't draw much power anyways, but it would be good to know

I know your pain with the 5S camera, doing the same until the 8 comes out so I hope the 7 drops in price :P

yes that is a sixpin i think, there are some proprietary connectors that also have six pins but the shape of the pins will prevent you from plugging in the wrong thing, so if it fits it's the right one.

I make Rainmeter things and other art :D

How many pins does it have?

(Hint: The answer is 6. So if a connector has 6 pins, that would mean that it's a 6 pin connector.)

That's a little odd, cause that's a server/workstation power supply.

Here's the issue:

The GTX 745 takes 55W with a system recommendation of 300W

The GTX 1060 doubles that at 120W and recommendation of 400W

(via Nvidia's specs on the website)

I think it may be time to upgrade your PSU anyways just to be on the safe side and compatibility sake

careful though, that sounds like a pre-built PSU, which if we know anything about prebuilts, it's that they tend to be... *shudder* proprietary...

That's seemingly as much or more a problem of lighting and camera operation than it is the phone camera.

In theory it could be some proprietary connector that just happened to look extremely similar to the standard 6-pin everybody talks about, and the picture quality makes that determination difficult.

If unsure check this page of standard connectors and note the shape of the pins:

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html

If the power supply is this it looks reasonable enough (I don't think HP would use something that had massively out-of-spec ripple even if voltage regulation looks good):

https://plugloadsolutions.com/psu_reports/HP INC_DPS-500AB-20 A_500W_ECOS 4363_Report.pdf

500W should be plenty unless you're packing an extreme CPU OC on some power-hungry chip and maybe other components, maybe are running at high ambient temperatures, etc.

Judging by the connectors here, they seem to be standard, and proprietary connectors are less common these days:

Recommendations are usually about twice as much as they need to be. His system, on that PSU, could easily have enough space to run a graphics card.

Usually proprietary power supplies aren't replaceable with ATX ones.

I'm talking about punching a hole in a side panel or something simple like that, not trying to rewire a psu. there's a fine line between ghetto modding and stupidity. Like I'm sure you've seen the picture of the guys in a pool floating a power strip on a flip flop (I'll include it in case you haven't), the ghetto mod equivalent would be hanging an extension cord from a tree branch or some other elevated place so that it shouldn't be able to reach the water. still stupid because electronics and water, but at least the risk is slightly a lot less
