As far as I know, they had some firmware edits in the DSi (and onwards) that blocked many of the original flash carts, including R4 cards, Edge cards and DSTT cards. There are special cards for DSi and even other ones for 3DS (which likely wont work because still ongoing updates killing compatibility).

 

The way these cards started up only works on the 'orignal DS/DS Lite OS' and wont work in the OS implementation on later DSi systems.

think they use diffrent ways to let you load the data because Nintendo dont like that they exist and do everything in their power to lock them out. they are diffrent for each system but i think there are ones that can be used on all of them too

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

R4 will not work with DSi due to differences in the firmware of the handhelds.

I recommend going with the Supercard DSTwo. It's what I have for my New 3DS XL and it works great.
