Taking Apart an ANCIENT Dell Desktop

WunderWuffle

So today, my dad decided to take an old computer home from my brother's house, and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to practice taking a computer apart and rebuilding it. I don't even know what some of the parts are.

The front of the computer.

post-17906-0-65948300-1385349095_thumb.j

The back of the computer.

post-17906-0-35777100-1385349120_thumb.j

The guts and glory of the dinosaur (Get it? It's old, and extinct? Bah, what am I saying... That joke was horrible.)

post-17906-0-79650100-1385349299_thumb.j

Is that the original DDR memory I see?

post-17906-0-14117800-1385349338_thumb.j

The other side of the DIMM.

post-17906-0-05072900-1385349388_thumb.j

LOL! Look at that CPU cooler!

post-17906-0-69052400-1385349446_thumb.j

That's one dusty heatsink...

post-17906-0-24718300-1385349474_thumb.j

I pulled the heatsink out, and the CPU came with it. I didnt break any pins though. Whew.

post-17906-0-28268000-1385349737_thumb.j

There's the CPU!

post-17906-0-46007700-1385349760_thumb.j

Warming the thermal paste up so I can remove the CPU.

post-17906-0-47038900-1385350069_thumb.j

I ended up dropping the CPU when I popped it off of the heatsink :/ It's not like Im going to be using it anyways...

post-17906-0-21016400-1385350136_thumb.j

I was using a mechanical pencil to fix the bent pins (Thank you Linus for making that video!)

post-17906-0-55442600-1385350248_thumb.j

I fixed it!

post-17906-0-88797900-1385350295_thumb.j

Eww. I hate colored PCBs.

post-17906-0-35058400-1385350357_thumb.j

I took the motherboard out by removing some screws.

post-17906-0-06945600-1385350388_thumb.j

The next thing I took out was the HDD. It doesn't even have a SATA port...

post-17906-0-52860800-1385350435_thumb.j

The PSU is pretty plain and boring.

post-17906-0-34883400-1385350477_thumb.j

I had this exact system. Except it was cold when I pulled off the heatsink, and ended up bending a whole side of pins. Wasn't using it again anyways.

I used to volunteer at an E cycling place and I would take apart all the old rigs that came in (most of which were these dell/HP ones). They all look just like this one on the inside with they big green directed airflow plastic heatsink thinga majig and their all grey PSU's. It's just ugly as balls.

wait wait wait. was the CPU passively cooled? is that even allowed?

The CPU is cooled by the heatsink, which is covered in the green shroud, and that shroud has a fan exhausting the heat out the case.

On a seperate note: KEEP THE HARD DRIVE IF YOU EVER HAVE A USE FOR IT!!! It's a 500GB drive, and although it's IDE, they were moderately fast. Or sell it for like 50 bucks.

Looks familiar.... I'm teaching myself a lot of stuff trying to prepare for the A+ and I took apart an old computer that was probably from the same general last night. It's amazing how far we've come since then.

I have that same system at the side of my TV sofa, I use it to place my bottle of water and snacks on top of it.  Who needs coffee tables...  xD

Hey! Watch out when opening it. That might be dangerous. When the archaeologists discovered King Tutankhamen's tomb, the rotting fumes inside were poisonous which killed most of the archaeologists. The same thing might happen to you. Both the Dell and the tomb seem to be of the same age.

I recently got a Xeon based HP workstation for free. Just my luck that it was the last single-core Xeon ever produced (P4 era) and though it was a dual socket motherboard it only had 1 CPU.

And the Quadro that was in it was really poor.

But the 500W PSU is excellent, so at least I got something out of it. Really nice industrial PSU with a LED lamp on the back to show power draw.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.
