Hi guys

I just upgraded my CPU to  the i7 4790k and my PSU isn't sufficient for the overclock. I can't buy the PSU yet coz im running low.

My question is: NOT overclocking immediately will get me worst results than overclocking right away the moment I installed my CPU?

Coz I thought like the CPU is still fresh and maybe that is the best time to overclock than after a few weeks or months the CPU is not fresh anymore, like food. I dunno just some crazy thoughts.

Anyone please guide me . . . thank you so much

No. if you overclock now, or in 5 months you will get the same overclock.

Doesn't matter WHEN you overclock it, just that you do a good job when you get to it. But yes, curious myself as to what PSU and other spec your PC is you have that wouldn't allow for ANY overclocking?>

or maybe not, chips can degrade oc over time.

They can degrade after 5 years of a high overclock, but 5 months of stock clocks... not so much. Either way, a year from now he's not going to get a worse overclock by running stock for a year than he would by running an OC for a year.

You are fine. You can check the exact model to know what it can and what it can't do, but you likely have enough power to run a full system and some CPU OC.

Bottom line: you can run your PC at stock now and overclock the CPU later. You can explore the limits of your current PSU too (mainly researching your CPU, but then also actually doing some mild OC ans checking how it's doing). There's no substantial difference to be expected.

Not very much over 5 months unless he got a really bad chip.

aside from the psu the mobo  vrm matter  too

that psu will be fine to oc.

some monts ago when i upgrade  my pc from a g3258  to i7 4790k   was too on evga 500w   and the  mobo was a msi b85i

i test  oc  on that  pc  and can go to 4.8

now a use  a Asrock z97 and change my psu to evga supernova p2 750  i dont oc  the i7  on stock can handle well   games

i recomend you jus test some oc  so you can see what your chip is capable    because some are really bad  at oc

One, you should not overclock your system with that PSU. It's a pretty low-quality unit.

I did not OC immediately because he said, when i was asking if my PSU is enough to do OC on my new chip (from G3258  - i7 4790k)

EVGA 500W 80+ WHITE

You have a single 40 amps 12v rail. Even at 80% efficiency, you are not going to have trouble running that GPU and any realistic overclock on the CPU as long as the PSU delivers according to its specs.

Efficiency measures power input, not output. His PSU should be giving the full 500W (or 480W on the 12V, based on the quoted portion) meaning that it'll pull, assuming 80% efficiency, 625W from the wall.

what?

That not how it works at all.

Buy a proper PSU. This is you nº1 priority.

Generally folks wait a few years until the CPU is showing its age and can't keep up with modern programs to OC. If you are PC Master Race, then you would OC right away for maximum bragging rights and FPS. Buy a better PSU ASAP, as a cheap or maxed out PSU stands a real chance of literally catching fire or blowing out and taking your new hardware with it.

I was suggesting you not overclock due to the low-quality unit you have for a PSU. It's not for overclocking hardware and really shouldn't be pulling anything more than the GTX 960 and Pentium you had in there before. Wattage-wise, you're fine and the EVGA can output 500W, but I would not run a hot and power-demanding system on it, thus I would not OC with it.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

my old psu was this  evga 500 w1 80+ white  100-w1-0500-kr  and was running a r9 270x

as above say buy a  better  psu if  you want oc 24/7, better to protect all your investment on that pc

your cpu  will be fine if you oc  later  you wont lost performance because " will be old and used "

you dont need to underclock  dont  need to worry if you run on stock  your psu will be fine   you  can play games   streaming or what  you like to do  the psu dont  explode from that(normaly they dont).

If you ove[rclock now or in a few months you will get the same performance and clock speed out of the processor but if you want better performance at the moment look at selling something you dont need or sell your power supply that isnt sufficient for the processor and see what you can do but plz dont buy a low efficiency high wattage power supply because then you are putting your whole system at risk no matter how much you need this overclock. When you can afford the power supply look for 80 plus bronze, silver, gold, platinum or titanium and from a reputable brand like evga, corsair, seasonic etc. Hope i helped a bit but with all these things i wouldnt rush into anything.
