What's Microsoft's strategy with the Xbox One X

IAmAndre

Hi,

I'm curious to know who Microsoft is targeting with their Xbox One X. As a PC gamer, I'm still following console news and I'm often asked for advice about purchases. For me it's very hard to recommend it to a console gamer since most of them don't really care about 4K gaming (only PC gamers worry about numbers and settings), and they would be better off buying both a PS4 and a Xbox One S, or a Switch for the same amount of money.

Then I just came across this article by PC Mag: https://www.pcmag.com/news/354374/xbox-one-xs-500-price-tag-includes-no-profit-margin?amp=1

Basically they are not making profits from selling the Xbox One X. Since they probably don't expect to sell a lot of them IMO, where are they actually going with it? I know the PS3 cost $600 back in the days, but that was also one of the best selling consoles of all times, which definitely won't be the case with the Xbox One X.

So what do you think? Could the One X be the big flop many of us are expecting?

Make profits off the games.

Also, main advantage of PC isn't the price, it's the fact that you can do so much more with it.

Microsoft is mainly targeting people with 4k TVs with money to spend on an expensive console.

Personally, I think it is an alright console (it is pretty powerful for a consolebut it is too expensive to be competitive.

The only recent console that I know of that makes a profit is the Switch. Sony and Microsoft both sell their consoles at a loss because they know that they will make it back from games. The switch had a profit margin cuz there was really only 1 game that people were buying it for.

more power for better visually impressive games, Microsoft doesn't really make a profit from this.

OK but the same games are available on the regular Xbox One, which reduces a lot the number of people who will actually buy the One X, and it's for me a reason not to buy the One X.

Do you think that's a big target? I don't know many people in this situation. If that's true, the One X will probably be hard to find in some countries.

Remember the WII.That console proved that console pepole don't care about raw specs but more on gameplay. I feel that if the Xbone X has a robust launch library of games it will succeed. Another important thing to consider is features. If the Xbone comes with some of the features that the PS4 pro missed it should do all right

A study shows nearly 50% of U.S homes to have UHD TVs by 2020, so somewhat large.

I'm not sure people are all that interested in 4K at all necessarily. To me, 4K is still at the point that HDTV was at when it was first arriving; content was virtually non-existent, and people weren't making that significant upgrade purchase for that very reason.

Now, in a more "closed" system of playing games, and maybe having Netflix or other streaming support, it might be reasonable give it a go if that's what you're primarily doing. To me, I'm sticking with my TVs because I don't download 4K content, mostly because a lot of what I want isn't available. If the content I enjoyed was ubiquitously available in 4K, then maybe I buy one on sale and give it a go. There's just not a huge benefit imo.

Another key advantage that the Wii had over its competitors was the price. The console was way cheaper (though they were many accessories sold separately) and the gameplay was original. Here it's different. The One X is just an upgraded Xbox One. There's no reason for people owning a One S to upgrade to a One X, and I really don't think many people will. On top of that, what do you think they can improve in? Xbox One X games are developped for the Xbox One mainly.

We are talking about console people. They usually don't care about better visual effects if you have to pay more for that. They are more after exclusive and stuff like that.

To which I would add that the One X already supports 4K playback. I know 4K will become mainstream at some point, but I don't think it justifies spending twice the price of the One S.

Incorrect. none of those made profit from the console sales.

It's exactly like with the 360 and PS3. They make money from the games.

Microsoft(IMO) is trying to build a complete portfolio of consoles

XboxOne=Gtx 1060

One S= Gtx 1070

One X = 1080

(not performance wise)
