wait... what about r3?

Soo the "new" ryzen cpus are great and all but it seems like we lost something... right, wasn't there supposed to be an r3 model as well? I can't find a whole lot of info on it and am wondering when that line will be released. It seems all people care for now is vega (and I can understand that). Did I miss something? What happened to R3?

Edit: at least it seems to be in Asus' mobo compatibility list already.

Strange we still dont have a real release date. I mean it really feels like r3 got run over by the vega hype train

R3s are gonna have to compete with i3s and the G4560 to stay competitive imo

AMD supposedly gets 80% chips from the wafer as a functioning 8-cores so R3 would cost them a lot of money if they had to cut cores from the R7 on purpose just to make worse CPUs.

I would love to see a G4560 competitor from AMD! But with 4 cores :3 would be awesome

They are true quads, rather than duals with HT so it's more than possible that they can and can do it well. The G4560 is going to be cheaper than the R3 so will be there biggest competitor so we will see how it goes, cause R3 could be great, it also could not be and the G4560 might still be better p to p

i doubt that the g4560 will be dethroned for the price performance. even the g4600/g4620 already are massively more expensive(if not twice the price), i would expect R3 to compete more with that since it fits the budget more.

I forgot how cheap a G4560 is R3 still double the price, starting at $129 (if I remember correctly) so yea it might not but who knows

Pentium will must likely stay without heavy competition.

i3 however, will get decimated. Unlocked i3 is already in the price point of R5, and locked i3 will compete with R3 that are unlocked.

i think there is a chance that AMD release a $50 chip that crushest the G4560 tbh, with three or four cores. really hopeing for 3 tbh because tripple cores are cool...

R3 will release after the summer most likely but seeing as AMD are getting 80% of their dyes 100% working with all cores i think it might come closer to christmas but definatly before it.(no tech company in their right mind would not have their full product line out by then if they think it will sell)

aye i3s are gone R3s look like they will be better in almost every way, don't know what the ipc will be for the R3s but it might be just as good if not better than the i3s

Mass market doesn't know or care.

2cores 4 threads or 4 cores 4 threads.

Same thread count == the same.

yes, but the mass market which I've met don't know the difference between a dual and a dual with HT/SMT and so will think a true quad is better, which is true

i guess it depends on how it's marketed and the price

aye that is true. It will also be in consumer products so the people in the shops might understand it (in my experience they do barely) and so be able to get tyhe R3s sold even better

They should make some sort lof upgrade if they do cut cores they should say you pay x amount of money and you will get a code to put into the software to unlock more cores and threads so people with smaller budgets now can buy more cores and threads when they get the money

I believe that this would be against a law in most countries.

Not to mention that people would figure out how to do it for free.

Well everyone is on the Threadripper and Epyc hype train. And that segment is more profitable then R3's so it makes sense they are pushing that first.

The sooner AMD can get some marketshare back in the server market the better. R3 is basically kept last but it makes sense.

Also APU's will work with the Vega architecture which isn't released either. It makes sense to develop R3's and APU's at the same time tbh.

For users yeah ... we would buy cheapest possible CPU, use some sort of "hack" or tool to unlock the rest of the cores for free, and have top tier CPU, for lowest possible price.

Something like that happened before, and since then, they just cut connections to those cores. They used to just disable it, but smart brains found a way to unlock those cores xD
