So, as always, when I'm thinking about buying a newly announced thing I feel the need to make a poll about it.

Last time was Ryzen 7, and while I did say I was planning to buy it, I found the platform disappointing (as it competed with Intel's consumer line) and decided to wait. This time, we're looking at an absolute monster in all respects, and my wallet is staring at me with dread.

I asked what price you guys wanted in the R7 poll, and you were utterly outrageous, totally unreasonable, maliciously demanding, and completely accurate, so, uh... I'll be paying more attention to that this time.

EDIT: If you don't plan to get it because you're not looking at the 'enthusiast' price bracket, please vote for the price range you think you'd say if you were.

Then I suppose you're the one who said <500. I should probably explain: If you don't think you'll get it, then the price thing is theoretical, meaning what you'd like to see if you were in the market. Saying you'd want it to be in a different price bracket altogether because you're looking at different products isn't terribly useful.

I am content with the 1800x already and I think any thing higher would be over kill for its workflow, for gaming the mainstream is still better way thus why i'm just waiting on canon lakes 10nm to upgrade my i7, but the 1800x will probably function for many many years given how good it is at productivity already.

I kind expected AMD to have a high core count Zen based CPU

I in a situation that my part time work of doing Photoshoots and videography using my Canon 5D Mk III which needs me to use my PC frequently but my slow ass LGA775 PCs are not up to the job at the moment.

My plan was getting the 1800X with 32GB of RAM for transcoding into Youtube 4K

but looking at the 16 core CPU, i might change my mind and get this over the Ryzen 7

if there is a Prosumer version 32 core version, i will def plonk my hard earn cash on it over the i9/Xeon half baked announcement

Getting a 7820X because 8c/16t is perfect for me and Intel will undoubtedly have higher performance than their Ryzen counterparts. $599 is worth the extra cost for superior Intel performance.

Threadripper looks very nice but I have absolutely no use for 16 cores. Motherboards for TR will be very expensive according to rumors.

motherboard + cpu only

combo, it was around $600 or so I would assume (3770k + P8Z77-V LE)

i got a buyer for it $550.

 I love parent logic sometimes.

And then I love saying "I'm sorry, but that is is a misconception on your part"

And then they rightly think I'm a snarky asshole.

well, im having terrible luck right now and i wish i just sold it and went fuck you, and just showed them the $550 (i know they keep the reciept for everything they buy that's tech because warranty)

i had to revert my cpu back to stock clocks because it was unstable at 4.4ghz :/ and 4.2ghz ..

I'm planning on doing blue and red this time for HEDT.  We'll see how things shape up with reviews for both.

Make sure you post very detailed analysis on your findings. I for one am very much looking forward to them. May be a while before 7980XE comes, so I guess I'll have to be patient.

I have an i7 6900K and an R7 1700, and as my workload is AVX2 limited Ryzen performs like crap. If Threadripper is just 2 Ryzen dies glued together, then it might give me performance nearly on par with my i7 6900K. If Epyc supported AVX2 computation in a single cycle then I would consider going for that, otherwise I will be expanding with more Intel processors.

I don't have a need for a 16+ thread cpu yet, but in the future if I was considering something for server related tasks it's quite an attractive option.  Lots of people who may have looked at older gen xeons at one point for cheap multicore sytems will probably want to pick up a Ryzen/Threadripper instead, as long as they have no need for ECC memory.

All we need now is more mini-itx.

I'm going to grab a 7900X at release and use it until the 7980XE releases.  I thought about just grabbing a 7740x since I still have my 5960x and then I could get rid of the z270 / 7700k, but I'll cross that bridge when x299 actually drops.

AVX 512 on Skylake X is going to be nice!  AMD really should address AVX with Threadripper.  After all, it's supposed to be an HEDT chip and not just a Ryzen 7 with more cores.

But it really is supposed to be Ryzen with more cores. In fact, it's supposed to be 2 R7s, at least architecturally.

I hadn't even thought of AVX, I guess that's something Intel has a leg up on... Hope they fix that with the next iteration, 'cause even if I don't use it, I'd love to see Ryzen be as successful as possible...

Yes, it is very exciting to see AVX512 on its way.

If Threadripper is just existing dies glued together, then I don't see it happening. Maybe with the next generation of Zen.

Hey since you have both platforms, why don't you give HWBOT x265 Benchmark a spin?
