Is X299 meant to replace Z270?

So I've heard about Intel's insane Skylake-X lineup, from the Core i7-7800X all the way up to the Core i9-7980XE behemoth and their X299 platform.

Another thing that I found interesting are the i7-7700K and i5-7600K refreshes, the Kaby Lake-X i7-7740X and the i5-7640X running on the same X299 platform.

If the Kaby Lake-X refreshes are supposed to replace the 7700K and 7600K, (you know, to move everyone over to X299 (with a slightly more expensive motherboard) for the future upgrade paths) what does this mean for Z270?

Does Intel expect everyone to hop over to the X299 no matter what? Is Z270 going to hit the bucket or will it be meant as some weird chipset alternative that's only a few hundred cheaper than the flagship that will have an excellent upgrade path?

X299 is the enthusiast/prosumer lineup. It's far from a Z270 replacement.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

The Z line and the X line are different. I imagine we'll see Z370 sometime in the future.

Rumor has it you won't be able to use LGA1151 v2 CPUs on LGA1151. So there's no real upgrade path.

Intel separates their products into 2 segments, mainstream and enthusiast. Z270 is part of mainstream and X299 is for enthusiast. Any cpus for X299 has nothing to do with Z270. X99 is already a replacement to Z270, even before X270 ever existed. After Kaby Lake, the successor is Coffee Lake or Canon Lake. can't remember which will come first.

nope.

Intel always has two flagship chipsets.

their X-series, like X99 and X299 for HEDT and servers, and their Z/H/B/etc. chipsets, like Z170, Z270, B250, etc. which are for general consumers

From what i understand the x299 platform is a follow up from their x99 platform

This is exactly why I'm confused about X299 replacing Z270.

intel's just being dumb with those quad-cores on the X299 socket. it's not a Z270 replacement.

they can throw in a Celeron on a X299 and it will still be enthusiast.

Z270 is not the successor to X99. Both are different.

Didn't say it was. I said X299 is the replacement. Z270 is the successor to Z170.
