How well will a 1070 handle demanding 1080p games

Nickmallow

I currently have an rx480 and I am a Ghost Recon Wildlands and BF1 player. Im a fan of graphics and those two games are very taxing on my graphics card. I also had to refund Battlegrounds because it ran 30fps on medium and low looked like a slap-a-bunch-of-asset-packs-together unity game. I want to know if some of the more demanding games out there can run well on a 1070. Most of the games I want/play that are demanding. I have a 144 hz monitor at 1080p and graphics quality is important and I dont know if a 1070 is overkill since I dont play a lot of the popular benchmarking games so i dont have a feeling of how powerful it is. Also if someone could tell me how to switch brands with the different drivers and do I need G-sync?

That question is best answered by looking at some bench.

Ok Ghost Recon is insanely taxing on hardware. Let's see, does it look good enough to justify that?

Not really, I mean it's good looking but not enough that I can justify it needing a 1080 for 60fps 1080p. Not when Far Cry Primal for instance, looks like this and has double the performance.

But anyway. You're looking at 48fps in 1080p max in GR:W. BF1 is a different story, a 1070 does 100+ fps there and if you get one you'll likely be more limited by how fast the CPU can handle its job.

If you have an RX 480, I'd stick with it.

As for G-Sync, from what I've read and used, it's nice to have but not needed.

Pretty much every game will run at least 60 fps on high or maxed on a 1070. However, if you're wanting to play demanding games on a 144hz monitor, you'd be better off with 1080 or waiting.

Of course it's important to mention that Vega will launch this week or the next. Might wanna wait for reviews on it to see if it stacks up well to the competition in Ghost Recon

In ghost recon with my OC'd 1070 I hover around 60fps in ghost recon with graphics settings maxed and as mentioned above it's one of the most taxing games so... but since freesync is much cheaper than g-sync you're probably better off waiting to see if amd announces vega and sets the release date for soon, and then you can enjoy the benefits of adaptive sync and a likely more affordable gpu. At least that's what I would be doing if I were in your shoes, if amd lets us down again then there's always the nvidia plan to fall back on

Does your current 144hz monitor have G-Sync or Freesync?

What CPU are you running? I know that the new Ghost Recon is badly optimized, but BF1 should probably be ok.

I dont thing GRW has good enough graphics to completely justify the preformance, but the game looks pretty good...

And Im not sure if I have free or G sync, but probably freesync because i notice monitors with gsync are labled with gsync on it so probably freesync

Descent, Wildlands is a very GPU and CPU intensive game. 1080ti doesn't exactly chew it up and spit it out on all maxed setting let alone a 1070 but it'll definitely beat the crap out of your 480. It will also run most every other game at 1080p very well.
