Question About 8 Gpus

I just watched a video of Linus putting 8 gpus into 1 server. 

So this is just out of noob curiosity....

What in the world can 8 gpus even be used for and how?

He uses it as a main machine to run many Virtual Machines off of using software, that way 7+ people can have their own computer that is gaming capable with only one physical machine. Rarely practical in practice, but it's a fun experiment.

it can be practical, just not really the way he did it, shove lower end GPUs, like GT 710s and you've a practical server to run lots of machines for your work force to use for your business, but yea I admit you may as well just get the each a PC, but the central server thing sounds and looks cooler

Yeah for other use cases it's great, thought he meant why Linus would do exactly this though :)

If you want a vdi system, use a gpu like a tesla that can support splitting it instead of lots of little ones.

I don't use VDIs, don't set them up and haven't looked into them so whoops, but yea didn't really know that so thanks
