Leaving your PC running is it bad?

I sometimes leave my PC running over night or go out for hours in my day and just leave my desktop running idle, i'v been told this is damaging to your PC and others say it has no moving mechanical parts so it doesn't matter it doesn't harm your PC which is the truth is leaving your PC idle for hours bad or damaging?

this does not damage the components , heck some People have their pc's running 24/7 under load (mining , folding or just Server usage) and that bearly Impacts lifespan of the parts

if having your pc running overnight is bad for it, your pc needs some repairs..

 

the only thing it'll damage is your power bill

My record on Windows 2k was about 90 days until a forced reboot because of updates.  I'm sure it could have run longer.  About 30 days on XP.  Maybe 60 on Windows 7.  I leave my computer on 24/7 most of the year, and it's been running fine for about 7 years now.

 

Unless you have absolute crap hardware or worse than stock cooling on a non-OC CPU (basically if you're worried about temperature) I wouldn't worry about it.  Especially not if you run Windows 10.  It'll reboot when it wants to.

Harddrives still don't like spinning up too often and die earlier. 

 

Though you should turn off your display if there isn't a changing screenblanker active. What could happen, but that can even happen when you are there is that something dies. Bad thing then, as long as you are there, you can smell the Amps grilling your hardware and pull the plug, if such a thing happens when you are not around, you come back to a piece of coal for sure.

 

But even though those things can happen, the chances are really really low.

Had my selfmade firewall pc running with an uptime of nearly 2 years before the CPU died... well it was a pentium I 233. Old age and so...

Depending on the hardware it can be bad for the powerbill. Those with older machines will find that the idle power consumption is uite a bit higher than newer computers (which is why I love my 4790K as there is less than 1 watt drawn by the cores when its idle, and my GTX 970 idles at around 17W). It can also be bad if the rig has a lot of lights or has a fan that has a high minimum speed (I don't know which is worse, bright blue power LED or an early Intel PWM fan that has a minimum speed of 2200RPM)

I wouldn't say it's bad, but electromigration is a thing and will eventually be the death of the computer components. However unless you plan on passing the computer down for generations the only thing keeping it on 24/7 will hurt is your power bill.

If someone asks how to explain electromigration to someone who doesn't know a thing about that or hear it the first time...

 

Imagine all your electricity conducting parts in your computer are carpets, and the electricity moving on them are people with shoes. After a while the carpet is worn thin and gets holes. The same happens with all conducting parts of every electrical device. 

 

But usually those last longer than a carpet =) 

 

So like Money bagzsz said, only a problem if the machine is about to become a heirloom to use for many generations to come.

Personally, I sleep my computer whenever I'm away. This cuts power consumption and also heat in my room. I try to restart it at least a time or two a week, because if I don't things start getting a little wonky

I think I had more issues turning my PC off after having it on constantly for months. the one day I had to leave the state for family vacation so I shut down the PC for like a week came back to a dead Power supply.
