[SOLVED] Ryzen 5 1600 - No Post, No BIOS, No Beeps

Hi guys, I've been trying to get my new Ryzen system to boot and it's just not working. Wonder if any of you could help this frustrated soul.

Here are the specs:

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600

Motherboard: ASRock B350M Pro4 , ASUS Prime B350m-A (tried both)

RAM: Team Dark 16GB  (2 x 8GB) DDR43000

GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition

Power Supply: SeaSonic G 550W 80+ Gold

I'm leaving out the storage from this list because it's not connected in any of my testing. Here's the problem: When I power on the system, the motherboard and fan LEDs light up, and all the fans are running. The screen stays completely black, and the motherboard speaker doesn't make any noise. So it isn't posting, isn't displaying the BIOS, and isn't making any sound on either of the motherboards I tested. These are all the things I've tried:

1. Graphics card - taken from my old rig, it works in that one, so not sure why it wouldn't work in this new one.

2. Power Supply - I plugged it into one of those PSU testers and it didn't show an error.

3. RAM - I swapped out my dimms for a single G-Skill 8GB stick that my friend had lying around. Still no BIOS or beeps.

4. Motherboard - Unable to resolve my problem, I went to Micro Center and exchanged my Asrock Motherboard for the ASUS one. Still the same problem occurs.

So now I'm stuck, the only part I haven't tested is the processor...do I have a dead CPU? If so, wouldn't the speaker make some noise? I'm very confused as to what to check next, and any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: Problem Solved! Swapped out the Team Dark RAM for some Crucial DDR4-2400, and it posted. Those who are thinking of making a build using Ryzen: be careful with choosing RAM. The Team Dark RAM I bought was listed in ASUS's Memory QVL, but it still didn't work.

When that happened to me it turned out to be a fried mobo (possibly CPU too)

^ I don't suspect the motherboard. OP said he already exchanged the original with another board at Microcenter.

@OP, worth noting that many newer mobos no longer ship with speakers with which to deliver beep codes. I'd recommend  salvaging one from a prior build, if possible, or perhaps scooping one up from MicroCenter. I also see they're sold on ebay for about $2

To troubleshoot, first I would take everything out of the case and work out of the motherboard's box to ensure I'm not shorting anything against the back of the case. Next disconnect everything, leaving only the motherboard, CPU (and obviously its cooler), and PSU connected. The point would be to at least make sure you can get a beep code for missing GPU/RAM, because as is you're getting nothing. From there add one component at a time (e.g. videocard, then RAM, and so on).

If I had to guess, perhaps you do have a DOA processor. I was that unlucky once where I had both a DOA processor and motherboard shipped to me via Amazon Warehouse deals... so I learned never to buy open box core components again. :D

2 dead mobos in a row is the worst luck if that's the case.

I would suggest mobo but the chance of 2 in a row is slim, im gonna suggest cpu dead on arrival, unlucky :( hope you can swap it out quick/easy enough

I tried it both with and without a graphics card (I have a speaker connected already) and still no beeps in either situation :o

So in my most recent similar situation, I didn't get beep codes either with my DOA processor.

Are you testing your build outside of the case though? Either on a test bed or just out of the motherboard's box? I know it sucks having to move everything into the case after, but it's a worthwhile step if anything for the peace of mind.

OP how long did you wait for? Ryzen takes a long time to POST on the first boot up, make sure to wait 5-10 min.

Is the power supply on? If so you should blow out the PSU leads to the MOBO and the CPU like an old game cartridge. Get a better PSU the Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 is a 460 watt card.

QFT, I recall JayzTwoCents and Austin did a joint Ryzen build where it took way longer than expected to boot/POST.

Oh seriously? I waited about 2-3 minutes max. I'll definitely try it again and wait longer! Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Hey everyone, problem solved! The associate at Micro Center told me to buy the Crucial Ballistix DDR4-2400 RAM and after swapping that out with the Team Dark one, it works fine. So the problem was not the Motherboard, CPU, or PSU, and the wild-goose-chase of replacing the motherboard was all for naught. Thankfully, it worked out in the end.

This is kind of concerning though, because the Team Dark RAM I bought was listed in the Memory QVL on ASUS's website for that board. But I guess that doesn't automatically mean that it's supported?

Anyway, thanks everyone for your suggestions! I'll edit my top post with the solution.

  • 2 years later...

Yeah this seems to be just a bug not sure if it's just the team dark pro which btw there are 2 versions of 1 has Samsung b die which motherboard supported and the other with hynix which works but is not supported by any motherboard manufacturer the only difference was price on the ram aspect offered in both red and white. I have the hynix and this is my second time I've faced this issue but there is good news as it takes literally 2 minutes to fix but is a pain in the ass finding somebody to l trustingly lend you a stick of their ddr4 ram. You just simply take your ram out and put theirs in, power up, post boot, power off, take their ram out put yours back in, power on and enjoy. If that didn't work post boot into bios off of their stick again and try resetting to factory bios and would probably be a smart idea to transfer saved profiles on the motherboard to USB drive then erase all profiles and if that still don't work disable boot keys as these boot keys are the issue in the first as if your 2032 battery is dead or missing and you lose power with boot keys on you will not post boot until either the ram or CPU is swapped as swapping the motherboard does nothing I figured out during my initial diagnosis of it. I have no idea how many types of ram this happens to or maybe even all ram but team dark pro hynix is confirmed but easily fixable.

This is not a ram bug this is a boot key bug blame Microsoft and motherboard manufacturers not team date.
