Ok, I have the new connector installed but I still get the Fan Error. But, on startup the fan spins Have any Idea?? Computer wont boot

It means you didn't do it correctly. Spend like $8 and get a replacement fan on eBay.

I'm pretty sure I did it right but, can I just buy the fan instead of the whole cooling system?

I didn't realize the heatsink was attached.  However, it's still not that expensive.  Check the product number on the fan to see which one is right: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xthinkpad+t460s+fan.TRS0&_nkw=thinkpad+t460s+fan&_sacat=0

The fan still isn't sold separately, at least not that I can find.

I will probably just buy the whole cooling thing. I still don't understand why it says the fan has a error but it still spins??

I can almost guaranty you that one of the wires/connectors is damaged, specifically the one that controls fan speed.  The fan is getting power, but there's no control over how it spins.

Ok, Thanks for the help. Before I buy a new one I will use my Multimeter to find what wires do what then I will try to find it they are damaged/ cut. If its repairable I will solder new wires on to the fan.

Able to get a new one?

Check to see if the system recognizes an RPM signal within the BIOS sounds like the fan may be faulty or a bad connection.

In the picture with the red circle how many cables do you see from that plug?

That looks to be a 5 pin cable, potentially a sensor built into the fan or such. The original connector was 5 but only had 4 populated.

Ok. I just soldered on new cables to the fan but still same problem. The fan turned on at boot, then off and back on then off again in a matter of seconds then says Fan Error

yeah as said it sounds like the fan is faulty if it's power cycling like that.

Ok Thanks for all your help.
