3D Rendering Performance: 2 RX 480s vs. 1 GTX 1070?

Which one will perform faster for 3D rendering without any overclocks? Either configuration will be paired with an AMD Ryzen 7 1700 CPU.

My system: CPU: Intel i5 6500; Mobo: H110M-k; GPU: Nvidia GT 730; Memory: 16 GB; HDD: 2x 1TB HDD;

Can the software that you use take advantage of multiple GPUs?

Why not get 1 1080? They cost $500 right now:

I might go for that 1080 if I get a Ryzen 5 instead. My max budget is $1700.

According to this page, Blender supports multi-GPU configurations, however NVidia's CUDA is faster than AMD's OpenGL. I would take the 1070 over dual 480s in this case.

Not sure how reliable this is, but its something:

It shows that a GTX1070 is well ahead of two RX480's (Ellesmere).

This can actually be explained by the fact that Blender uses CUDA on Nvidia cards (as opposed to OpenCL).

CUDA is a way more stable and mature platform with more opportunities for optimization so this makes sense to some extend.

If I were you, I'd just go for the GTX1070 (depending on local pricing of coarse).

You have to consider if the extra money for a GTX1080 is worth it (the different in rendering performance is not that big).

Go nvidia as Cudahy support is much better cycles than opencl.
