THIS WAS AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE

________

I'm writing this so I can mark it as solved. This is to make sure no confusion is caused for people viewing this in the future.

Anyway, this was really fun to make. I did about 55 hours of research (rough estimate) and spent 2.5 hours typing it up.

Since you are from the future, enjoy this thread I made.

Hi all,

I'm going to build this computer soon, and I want to see what you guys think of it. My whole goal with this computer is to run 3 virtual computers and a NAS off of it. One of the virtual computers is for gaming. Another is for general workstation use and content creation, and the other is for miscellaneous stuff, including Bitcoin mining and Folding@home. Hopefully this will last me a while. I've done tons of research, and I think you guys will be interested.

I'm putting it in a special part of my house that I haven't found a use for yet. I have this medium-to-large sized room that has this small, bathroom sized room on the back wall, with a glass door. I'm planning to put the computer in that small room, and have the setup in the larger one.

Alrighty. Now I'm going to explain why I chose each part.

The Xeons. Yep. I went with the 22 core ones, because I felt like less than that wouldn't be enough for my use case. Of course, I will be assigning a different amount of cores to each machine. I think they would work well here.

"But wait a second! You're doing more cores that are less powerful! The gaming virtual computer will suffer! @LinusTech even made a video about that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ "

And you'd be right about that. But, not this time! I will be overclocking the hell out of this thing.

How?

A bong cooler. Linus made a video about bong cooling already: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_b7RDuLwcI

This cooler would allow me possibly reach sub-ambient temperatures. Except my bong cooler will be a lot more beefy than the one Linus made. Also, I live in a desert (as you can see by my profile's location), so this should be even more effective for me.

How I put it in this list, I put one entry that includes EVERYTHING I need. CPU blocks, GPU blocks (Yes, even the GPUs), Fans, PVC pipping, fittings, the insulated container, the shower heads, the tubing, the pumps, even the dielectric grease, all of that stuff.

Why at $1100 though? This also includes the amount of money that I need to connect it to my house plumbing, a solution that doesn't have me periodically topping up the cooler.

For thermal compound, I'm using Arctic Silver Ceramique, as it has been shown to perform better than other compounds in a situation such as a bong cooler.

My motherboard is the Asus Z10PE-D16 WS. It has the two sockets, all the DIMM slots I want, all the PCI-E slots I want, and it even has IPMI support, which is something I plan on using (remember Linus made a video on IPMI here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGeEuyG_DIc ). It is also apart of Asus's WS lineup, which is cool.

RAM. I decided to go with 512GB. This is a little bit more than I need, but should be great long term. I have 8 sticks of 64GB. It is ECC RAM too, which is important for me. I plan on running this as often as possible, so ECC RAM would be great to minimize errors.

Here comes the storage. When looking at it in the list, it might look unreasonable, but there is a method to my madness here. Just keep in mind, I'm running 3 virtual computers AND a NAS on this.

I have one Samsung 960 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD. This one is for the miscellaneous/mining virtual computer. It should be enough storage for this.

The two Intel DC P3608 4TB PCI-E SSDs. This will be running in an unRAID array, effectively RAID 1. This is for the general workstation. Should be enough for this purpose.

For Samsung 850 Evo 4TB SATA III SSDs. This is also in an unRAID array, effectively RAID 10. This gives me 16TB, and it is for the gaming rig, I think it is a perfect storage solution here.

Then, six Seagate IronWolf Pro 10TB helium-filled SATA III SSDs. Once again, in an unRAID array, effectively RAID 5. This yields 50TB of storage, at it seems to be perfect for the NAS.

Video Card time.

Two Titan XPs in SLI. Yeah. This is for the gaming rig. I thought about getting the 1080ti, but figured that that the TItan XPs would be better for my use case, as well as better for future-proofing.

"But wait! You said you were running virtual computers with unRAID! unRAID does not support SLI! It only supports Crossfire!" You'd be right. But, with some third-party software and unRAID magic, I have found a way for unRAID to work with SLI. I might make a post about this at some point.

Then, I have two Quadro P6000s in there. Do note: These ARE NOT in SLI. One of them is for the workstation, the other is for the miscellaneous/mining rig. I think they would show off their muscles here, especially with their 24GB of video RAM. Once again, I feel this is also a good option for future-proofing reasons.

Now, as mentioned above, I will be cooling all four of these with the bong cooler. I'm not going to be suffocating them.

The Case was kinda a no-brainer. The Phanteks Enthoo Luxe looks amazing, and has RGB lights built in (I will be adding more). It is also large enough to hold the motherboard, which is larger than standard ATX.

The power supply I chose because it was the ONLY 2000W PSU I could find. I need the 2000W here, as even though PCPP tells me it is fine, It does not take into account the custom parts, which would edge it over the limit of other, lower-capacity PSUs. Also, it is by Super Flower, a brand that likely you and I have heard of, so no shady stuff here. It is also rated at 80+ Platinum efficiency, which is cool; I originally wanted to go with 80+ Titanium, but that couldn't happen.

I chucked an external Blu Ray drive in the list, it would allow me to move it between virtual computers.

I am going to run EIGHT Operating systems on this. That's right, EIGHT.

Windows 10 Pro is for the gaming rig

One copy of Windows Server is for the miscellaneous/mining computer, the other is for the workstation

And I have FIVE copies of unRAID. I did five because unRAID only supports 1 array. With using 5 copies of unRAID, as well as some OS-Ception and one third-party tool, I can run all 4 arrays using unRAID. I might make a forums post explaining how I did this later.

I'm replacing the three case fans with some better one, do note that these are NOT a part of the Bong Cooler.

I have two different fan controllers here. One is for the all the fans in the bong cooler, while the other is for the three case fans. Not really much explanation needed.

The monitors, I think, were an excellent choice. Let me explain. Each of the three computers gets three normal monitors, and one ultrawide.

The gaming machine is a little bit different, it as one 165Hz monitor and two 4K 60Hz, rather than 3 4K 60Hz monitors.

I chose the Asus PG279Q ROG Swift 27'' 1440p 165Hz IPS monitor as the high refresh rate one for the gaming computer.

The Asus PG27AQ 27'' 4K 60Hz IPS monitor will be my monitor of choice for the rest of the non-ultrawides

And the ultrawides, I'm using the Asus ROG Swift PG348Q 34'' 1440p 100Hz monitor, which is really nice.

Since I have three computers, I have three keyboards, and three mice.

I will be using the WASD Code, which features Cherry MX Clear switches, my personal favorite. I used to have one of these, but it broke due to user-error.

Then I have the Logitech G500 mice. Yes. It doesn't seem that great, but it fits my mice preferences. A friend of mine has one, and I really like it.

Headphones and speakers time.

I have two headphones in here. An audiophile-grade one, and a gaming headset.

The Sennheiser HD800 S is an amazing choice, a little pricey, but amazing.

My gaming headset will be the Sennheiser PC 363D headset. I've heard really good things about it, and I am willing to try it out.

Then, some Logitech speakers for the room, whenever I do home-theater stuff.

I'm going to skip around in the list now, as I'm talking about audio gear.

I bought some Amps and DACs from Schitt audio, a respected brand.

I have the Mjolnir 2 Amp and the Gungnir DAC. This should work great.

I included a UPS in here, as I fear a power outage. This is a large-capacity UPS. It should work great. I know, I'm not rack-mounting it, but it should be fine.

Now onto the tsunami of "custom" parts.

RBG lighting from CableMod. It should make this even more bad-ass. I'm even thinking about RGB'ing the bong cooler.

I've also got some really nice-looking custom cables from CableMod.

I included the desks in here, as I'm buying the desks at the same time of the computer, and it is an important part of the setup.

I have two corner desks, even though they won't go in corners.

The corners will be facing out, so that makes the area inside rectangular. I will space them out a little, so I have an entrance on one side, and the other side has the glass door into the room with the computer. Move the chair out, it becomes a VR space. Amazing.

I included a DXRacer Chair, as it seems like something I would enjoy, and a friend of mine has one of these, and I've found the chair to be really comfortable.

As mentioned before, I plan to do VR stuff. I put an HTC Vive in this list. Should be great.

With my workstation, I do plan to do some audio-work. I included this awesome bundle I found on Amazon. It includes a Focusrite audio interface, as well as an AT4040. I was actually looking for both of these separately, then stumbled upon the bundle.

I included some mounting brackets, just in case. No pun intended.

Then I have a tape drive backup system, along with 8TB worth of tape drive. HP has a wonderful backup system for this, and I should be able to use it for all of my long-term backup needs.

Then, I included an Acer H7550STz 3D DLP projector as well as a Carada 104'' projector screen. This is similar to the setup Linus has in his conference room, which is shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6piTG5EdhQ

This will work for all of my home-theater needs. I really plan on using it, along with those speakers I talked about above.

I have three 13-port powered USB hubs. One for each machine. This should give me all the USB ports I need right in front of me. No need to go behind the computer and plug it in there.

I included an Ultimaker 3 Extended in here, as I'm really into 3D printing. I've been really intrigued by it. I think I will use it many times. It's also neat because of it's support for PVA, a water-soluble filament. @Slick showed this off here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66tQR7koR_Q

Then, I have a colorimeter. This should allow me to calibrate my monitors whenever I want. I can always get the best color accuracy.

I included three SteelSeries 67500 QcK XXL mouse pads. One for each virtual computer. I don't have much else to say about them.

And finally...

Acoustic paneling.

I'm not only going to put it in the small room that the computer is in, but I'm putting it in the room with everything else as well.

Not only will this do some sound-proofing, but it will make the rooms look 10 times more bad-ass.

Don't worry the new generation of VEGA and Volta will make this build obsolete in couple of months

  • 1 additional internal 2.5" drive bay is needed.
  • Intel Xeon E5-2699 V4 2.2GHz 22-Core OEM/Tray Processor does not include a stock CPU cooler. Adding a CPU Cooler to your part list is recommended.

I'd suggest reading the whole post that I've spent about 2.5 hours typing up. That time does not include research for making the list.

If I win the lottery I'm gonna buy a 7700k, 6900k, 6950x, 6850k, 1800x, 1600x, 1400x, 14 1080 tis (two for each system), $600 mobos for each of em as well as 3600 MHz trident z ram and buy 7 different top of the line cases and then custom water cool every single one. While at it I might as well buy another system and do some ln2 overclocking.

Maybe while at it I'll also buy a new house and have a couple rooms dedicated to gaming.

EDIT: Forgot to mention the 21 Predator X34s I'll buy to go with em.
