gtx 1060 3gb or 6 gb?

L3x0

I have been thinking about buying the gtx 1060 but I am not sure how much vram I need. Do you guys think that 3 gb vram is enough for a game like dayz or H1Z1 if I play on the highest settings or do you think that I should get 6gb vram?

Like I said earlier, I'm not sure. I don't have those games, let alone a GTX 1060. I still have a GeForce 9500GT 1GB.聽

The 3gb is not a good card for the asking price, besides even at 1080p you will need 4gb to make sure all runs smoothly, your question should be rx480 8gb vs GTX 1060 6gb rather...

If you don't like AMD then go with the 6gb vram variant, nVidia is releasing a DX12 ready driver for pascal and maxwell as it seems so the performance on the latest titles might boost up some.

the gtx 1060 3gb isnt just a gtx 1060 6gb with less vram. it is actually a cut down version of the gtx 1060 6gb so there will actually be a performance difference between the 2 in games that don't need 3gb of vram. i would say if you want a card that is a bit cheaper but still gives good performance look at the rx 480 4gb version as it has plenty of vram for 1080p and has similar performance to the gtx 1060 6gb.聽

@Princess Cadence聽But today's聽games doesn't require more than 3GB vram I think (ofc depending on the game as well), so wouldn't that mean that the rest of the vram goes to waste..

A lot of newer games eat up just over 3 gb of ram on the default settings.

4gb rx 480 cost about the same as a 8 gb rx 470

A lot of games are passing the 3gb line, some won't even start if you only got 2gb vram available so you are on the limit here, besides like stated above, the 3gb one is actually an inferior version of the 6gb in everything not only the video ram.

If you can not afford a 6gb 1060 then buy the rx480, simple as that.

its not about the extra vram. the 3gb version is a cut down version of the gtx 1060 so it has less performance in games across the board regardless if the game needs more than 3gb of vram. nvidia made a dumb move by not giving the card a different name because its a bit misleading.聽

the gtx 1060 3gb is vastly overpriced. thats the issue with the gtx 1060 3gb. if it was the price of a rx 470 then i could see the why some might consider getting it but as is its not the case.聽

It has been even better performance wise in DX12, could change since nVidia finally is releasing a DX12 ready driver, but at the end of the day I would call both cards even still. If you are not in a rush you could always save some money for another month and buy the RX580 which will be as good as a GTX 1070 from what AMD is saying.
