Moving hdd from old pc to new pc

Aquados

I am currently building a pc and will be using my hdd from old pc. I know I need to do the sysprep. I want to keep all of my files and programs installed when I move it to the new pc. What am I losing when I do the sysprep. ps I have them baked up.

And how does the linus group move the drives to different systems and still keep those installed programs on them or they just go through reinstalling them?

moving a OS drive to a new machine is doable, but it's a bit of a process, much simpler to do a clean install if you have your data backed up. Just download the program install files in advance and getting it up and going is pretty quick, You won't really save time trying to migrate an OS drive to a new system rather than clean installing anyway.

Linus and co can simply just install windows whenever they do a new machine, much quicker and easier than trying to move an OS through multiple hardware configs

So I just do the sysprep and have a clean start. Move my files back in and reinstall each program. ok I will now begin making a list.

For games do I just need to keep the directory the same?

How do I prepare for the action of moving hdd that has os and files to a new pc build?

I know sysprep will keep files but get rid of installed programs.

Then how do I transfer os to ssd.

(this is my first system build all tips and things I must know are appreciated)

It either:

1. wont work

2. will have terrible performance.

----

Install windows clean onto the ssd.

Set the sata mode to external and connect the HDD while in windows.

Backup what you need to onto the ssd.

Format the HDD.

Move the files back.

You can transfer your stuff over using a free program like Macrium Reflect with the SSD directly connected to your computer, or through an adapter like the following:

https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00HJZJI84

Unfortunately, once you get that going on your new machine, you will have to re-validate Windows, likely by calling Microsoft and asking to remove your key from registration on the other machine.

What if I move the hdd to the pc. Have it boot up. Plug in ssd and then transfer the os.

hdd in sata 0  ssd in sata 1

i would recommend just backing up any important files on the hardrive to someplace else and just do a fresh install of windows on the new pc. its way more work than what it is worth trying to transfer the os.

I have tried various cloning software to make backups. It is going to be faster to do a clean install. obvious downside is downloading application installers. if all your games are on steam it's really easy, you can just copy the game files over

Just do a backup of your data and perform complete reinstall on the new PC using the HDD. Don't bring the old baggage associated with the old Windows install to the new PC. And there's a big chance it's not going to boot in the new PC. Even if it does boot, you'll be chasing gremlins.

Well with Windows 10, the registration is bound to the motherboard, so you will need to re-register it with Microsoft. It is best practice to do a 100% fresh, clean install when you are changing hardware, especially the motherboard. It is possible do it without, but you could run into a plethora of issues with driver conflicts etc...

By not doing it. Fresh install on new hardware, no old settings.

this.

back up the following:

- all data you intend on keeping

- a screenshot of your desktop and start menu

- list of installed programs

- installers for said programs, it'll save you the hassle of using IE/edge to download chrome/firefox xD

and then just nuke the data on your OS drive and start with a clean sheet :P

First of all. What license you have (OEM or retail) and have you connected it to your account? Actual move you should just do. In theory Win10 will be able to handle driver change without issues. But just in case, backup everything you feel is important.

Unless you have bind key to your account, you will not be able to use Win10 with new system. Backup all and reinstall is best when moving off OEM stuff.
