Any love for fiber at LTT?

Hi!

 

I saw a whole bunch of nice LTT videos talking about servers and I was wondering : Where is the optical fiber at?

 

It just seems like whenever fiber is available, you get a cooper version ^^? (Talking here about the original 10gbit base-t choice, the QSFP cooper, every server equipment that I saw in the videos etc..)

if i'd have to take a wild guess, price, and/or the fact fiber is rather fragile.

price is the big one. sfp+'s and qsfp's and the cable cost much more than a short direct attach cable.

 

You can bend them a lot though normally. You can't kink them, but there much easier to worth with than a cat 6a would be.

but you can be rough to a cat6a cable without fearing it'll break.

There are only three advantages that fibre provides over DAC when talking 10gig/40gig

  • Better compatibility with GBIC's versus DAC cables
  • Longer runs availible
  • Slightly lower power consumption (scales when talking an entire data hall)

i'd say more than slightly.. i worked on equipment that had 48 direct attached copper cables per switch, during plugging stuff in the switches went from "a cool breeze" to "hairdryer, scorching your skin in the process"

Even 48 SPF+ and QSFP+ fibre modules would use a fair amount of power. The biggest downside to 48 SFP+ DAC is the damn cable bulk and the fight you have to do to cable manage it nicely, then after all that effort someone needs to remove 1 cable in the middle. RIP all your effort.

you get the ticket to move a switch.

 

You go to the switch.

 

There are about 10 qsfp direct attach cords tightly strung infront of it.

 

So you talk to the people who manage the cables.

 

Then you uplug those suckers and realize there to short to manage.

and also, this place was basicly 10 gig everything, they would rather put mutliple 10 gig links than one faster link, for redundancy purposes. if "downtime isnt an option", mroe than 10 gig over a single cable is too much to lose at once.

Haha you just described us :P. Except we are 40Gb distribution and 10Gb to servers, our firewalls are also 40Gb and when out Netapps get replaced those will also likely be 40Gb.

 

Dual 48 SFP+ ToR switches with 2 QSFP uplinks each out of them, racked devices have a single connection to each switch. ToR switches connect to 40Gb distribution switches etc etc you get the point, common setup but using nice toys.

 

We also only run active-passive connectivity in our DCs between everything so if there is a link fail-over it can never cause unexpected over subscription, servers included. Nothing is allowed to be configured in any kind of Active-Active manor, servers/filers/ToR switches etc.

Basically half our network is wasted doing nothing 'just in case'.

We have two of EVERYTHING. So much money is spent in the IT sector on 'just in case', sometimes because we need to and other times we are either forced to or no body can decide was is and isn't important so DR all of it.
