Does "X" next to Ryzen mean it's overclockable?

For example:

Is the X synonymous how Intel does their "2700K" naming? Only X ones are overclockable?

I was under the impression that they would all be unlocked.

All of them are overclockable.

all amd chips will be unlocked, the x probably just have a higher clock out of the box but who knows

X probably stands for X-tra money to get this model.

My thought is that it may represent the best version of that particular model(1400 vs 1400X, 1600 vs 1600X), but it would only apply to situations where there are multiple models of the same type. So 1100 would be excluded, and not receive an X on its SKU.

It's more than likely better binned chips that are clocked higher out of the box, but all of the Ryzen chips should be unlocked

it's also very likely that AMD will put out 2C/4T chips to compete with the G4560 and crush it if those can be OC'd

I'm wondering if you could overclock the cheapest 8 core, to perform like the best 8 core.

So overclocking 1700, to be as good as 1800X

But if that's possible, people would probbably just buy that cheaper CPU, OC it a bit and have same performance for less money.

Can't wait for release, to see single core performance, overall performance, OC capabilities, temperatures (is CPU die soldered to IHS or not) .... There are so many questions that I want answers to right now xD

Thanks everyone! I have another question

Is the lower power wattage versions geared towards servers/people that are frugal about their power bill? I'm just curious because I personally would go for the higher TDP one to get max performance, right?

TDP is a measure of heat that is expected to be dissipated for any component. It doesn't measure power usage.

But isn't the higher TDP = better performance?

There are many other important factors when it comes to performance vs TDP.

For an extreme example, Intel's Avoton has a TDP of ~20W while a 4790K has 95W.

Is the 4790K better? Perhaps for gaming. For a server? No. Can the Avoton be used for light and mid-tier gaming? Yes.

The add-ons and functionality of the Avoton makes it much more suited for server duties such as data management and VMs where the ECC could make a difference.

Generally speaking the CPUs with really low TDPs (like laptop CPUs or Intel's "T" products) run at reduced clock speeds compared to the mainline desktop products. If you're just building a typical desktop for gaming or work use with appropriate cooling, you probably don't need or want a "low TDP" SKU.
