reusing old PC?

Specs.

Depending on how old you could make a nas or server, but often the extra power costs will make it cheaper just to buy a new system.

HTPC. I see NAS coming up alot and I find it quite stupid. Youre using a large amount of power when its just easier to install a new hard drive in your PC, and if you need access across multiple devices just put it on a portable HDD, its cheaper in every way and doesnt cost power

NAS has it's own uses, it doesn't specifically mean extra storage.

You can be imaginative can't you? It's called a Network Attached Storage, if you constantly move files from computer to computer its easier than carrying around a portable harddrive. For every single person it might not be practical, but some workplaces it's almost essential.

its good if you have a number of people who want to stream your illegal pornography collection. i agree with your post above, most homes do not need a NAS over an USB drive. is it however very essential for working in teams. folder sharing is just too slow

I do highly doubt a 12 year old needs this. And if he does I assume he would have already known to use it for that

NAS = Network Attached Storage.

it's just basically a fancy way of saying a server of some sort that has a primary responsibility of hosting files and data, that is accessible over your network. (doesn't have to be internet facing)

You could always make this into a small server. Teach yourself Linux or windows administration. build yourself a fancy firewall. A home theatre PC, a game server. storage server, remote processing server? Streaming machine?

seriously. a spare PC can do just about anything any other computer could do.

Thats a great starting point for learning Servers and using an old PC.

Set it up with either an out of the box NAS solution (like freeNAS) or if you're feeling really adventurous and want to learn, Pick up a full linux distro and try to learn how to build a NAS from that.

which distro do you recommend for the server and for my pc because I am thinking of switching to Linux :D

This is a tougher question, there are a LOT of distro's out there and they all do different things well. People will chime in with their favourites for different reasons. I recommend checking out the linux / other OS's subforum here. there are a lot of questions already asking what people's favourite Distro's are.

For me though:

Server: CentOS

Desktop: Linux Mint

Really depends on what is in it. If it's got some decent RAM, and a CPU, you can always use it as a Netlfix/YouTube machine. I'd try doing some 1080p video on it.

CPU: Intel Core i5 2400 GPU: MSi GTX 1050 Ti 4GT OC RAM: 14GB DDR3 (3x2GB, 1x8GB) Mobo: Acer MB.GAU07.001 Case: Gateway DX4860 PSU: EVGA 600W Bronze Plus
