well 1070 is a really good value, if OP wants to go into the midrange the 480 is the king.

Really? OK, Finewine gave us a 3fps increase in GTA performance from launch:

But wait. The 1060 got a 2FPS increase as well!

BTW, if you take a look at the games that the 2 reviews use, you will notice that they are not the same...

you understand its actually improving right? having 8gb of vram also helps a lot in some games and modding. 

we can argue forever or draw a conclusion saying the 480 is better for the future and 1060 is better for now. there are many positive and negative for both cards, OP i suggest you to go for 480 or save a bit more for a 1070. i don't think 1060 is worth it in its price range, wait for sales when you can pick up a 480 for low as 160 usd after rebate.

OP, I hate you. I hope nobody asks this question again. Now you have to sift through all this and everybody's mad. I recommend the 480. It would be really beneficial for you to save for a 1070. If you can't 480.

Actually, the answer is simple... Check for the most up to date benchmarks for the games that you care about...

And yet the framerate is very playable on the RX 480... I get 130 - 190fps in Overwatch, on high/ultra @1080p.

 

And GTA V, with a couple tweaks, i get over 70fps.

Dude, I was just pointing out that the 1060 performs better in some games (mostly older games), so that the OP could get a clear picture of how they truly stack up.... 

IMO, the choice between the 2 should be made based on the price and that alone, as they are withing 1% of each other....

Honestly, there isn't that much difference so you'll be happy with either IMO.  Only reason why I went with the 1060 is because the RX 480 that was in-stock at Canada Computers at the time was the MSI RX 480 Gaming X, which was significantly more expensive than the Zotac GTX 1060 AMP! Edition.

 

And I have no regrets.

10-20FPS is not margin of error.......... Yes, it doesn't matter which one he gets because in all other games they are within 1-2FPS of each other, unless he plays some of the aforementioned games, in which one of the two is a better option....
