No: The 1060 is better in 2015 and older games, while they are equal in newer games when using DX11... The 480 is also faster when using Vulkan/DX12

Exceptions are Overwatch, in which the 1060 around 20 FPS more than the 480, GTA V in which the 1060 beats the 480 by around 10 FPS, Doom, where the RX 480 gets 20 FPS more than the 1060 and Hitman where the RX 480 outperforms the 1060 by ~10FPS

Then get the 1060 6GB, it is a rather obvious choice here:

yes i have read, i am assuming OP won't be playing these games his whole life. the 1060 dx12 and vulkin support is weak, considering new games are more optimized for newer hardware and newer engine the 480 will have a better lifespan.

nVida cards do benefit from Vulkan though, I would say the rx 480 edge limits to dx12

i am gonna say the 480 has a edge in vulkin and dx 12, 1060 is not really worth it, its really middle of the road card in my opinion. get the 480 or save a bit more for the 1070.

Hmmmm, what if Nvidia sponsors many upcoming titles, do you think that the RX 480 would outperform it in those games as well? Honestly, get whichever performs best for the games that you play rn and don't worry so much about "futureproofing".

Additionally, GTA VI will be launched in 2020, so GTA V will be the latest GTA for another 3 years...

We will have to wait and see, because atm, Ashes of the Singularity is the only proper DX12 game and the 1060 and 480 perform similarly...

what if amd sponsors it? then 1060 would loose right. when buying at a budget its better to go for a good budget card with proper support. Nvidia has its focus on 1070 and 1080 more while amd is using more energy on the 480.

you say that as if the gta franchise are the only games he will ever play, and they both perform more than adequately in overwatch. The seperation will only grow.

precisely, 480 is AMD's crowning jewel, why wouldn't they?

doom made a good implementation also remember the 480 has better potential being 5.5 teraflops while the 1060 is 4.4 tereflops.

Exactly, you can't predict the future, so get whichever performs better for the games that you play right now...

I didn't know that Vega will be unoptimized, interesting....

Really...? I haven't noticed any major performance improvement in GTA or Overwatch... Those titles heavily favor Nvidia though, so the 1060 will perform better....

OK, can you tell me a game that isn't Doom that is using Vulkan?

Vulkan is good for both nVidia and AMD, it sure should be the new standard API since dx12 still sucks, even to AMD if you do think about it... regardless I do fully agree isn't even rx 480 vs gtx 1060, aside GTA V and some other titles the rx 480 clearly is the best deal for the buck, the true question is go rx 480 or save a bit more for the gtx 1070 as you said.
