How much longer will my i7 4790k last?

How long do you guys think my i7 4790k will be able to stay relevant and be able to keep up with the latest games 2-3 years or even longer?

3-4 Regularly

5 If you don't want to upgrade

6-7 If you really want it to last (Although these are the years you see the drop)

CPU don't have a life. It's the human who sets a life span for their cpu.

I think what he's saying is it depends on the user as to how much they're willing to tolerate slightly lower performance for. Some people may want highest performance possible and will upgrade soon; other's want to save money.

all depends on how games and software move forward and what kind of development we will be seeing in the next few years in the CPU department. i would say its going to be relevant another 4 years, 6 with a decent overclock

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Either way, his question was not how long can the 4790k MATERIALY last, but in terms of gaming performance

For an optimal experience in most AAA games, probably 3 years or so. 4+ if overclocked.

 

For an optimal experience in CPU-heavy games, probably 2 years. 3 if overclocked.

 

If you're willing to compromise on quality settings in games in the future, 5+ years.

 

I've had my 2600K since early 2011, and since last year it has been feeling some strain with modern titles. The Division really highlighted this for me.

I'm not saying he said how long it materialy lasts. Numlock was also referring to gaming. He was saying how long the owner of the chip would deem the chip usable depends largely on them. If they are someone that has to have very good fps on high settings at a high resolution and/or high fps, they might want to upgrade in a year or two. If they're someone that doesn't have a lot of money, they might want to keep it for another 4-5 years. If they worked night and day for the CPU and are super poor, then maybe they'll keep it for another 6-7 years. How long you decide a CPU is usable largely depends on the person who owns it.

4-5 years will be good maybe 6 if you overclock it a bit.

Depends.

Games could make a leap and demand 200% more CPU power xD

 

I think you (and me) will be fine with this CPU for quite some time. Luckily DX12 and Vulkan are making miracles with optimisation.

Then what should you call it besides life span? Whether it's gaming or other purpose, the life of a cpu is set by its user.
