6800k vs 5820k

Which CPU do you all think is the better buy?

I live close to a microcenter, so the difference in price is

5820k- $320

6800k-$380

I know that the 6800k is just a generation newer 5820k, but I hear that the IPC is a little bit better but the overclocking headroom is a little worse if not bad. Out of curiousity, do you all thing it is a bad decision to go for the 5820k because of how old it is?

it's not worth it

I had this same dilemma at my microcenter, but the price difference was too large to go for the "newer" architecture. Also, haswell-e overclocks better, as well as looking better imo.

you will loose support of 128 GB of RAM, but other than that, the 5820k is better value. $60 saved

Just out of curiosity, what do you mean by 'looking better'?

Haswell master race reporting. The gains between Haswell, Skylake, Kabylake, Cannonlake and whatever body of water is next are incremental at best, with only minor increases in performance. You won't notice major differences until you get four or five solid generations between them. So in short yes, if the Haswell-E chip is cheaper go for it, it'll still be a badass platform and will be for several more years.

Sooooo uuuhhhh, while I don't want to be that guy... I say go for the 6800K. I have a 5820k, and while I do love it, If you said to me I could upgrade for $60, I would a heartbeat.

Not that is any reason. But, with the newer architecture of the 6800k, you "could" get a couple fps gainz, like 5-15%. Which doesn't sound like much. Until you realize that the difference between a GTX 1080 and 1070 is only like 20% increase for $200ish more.

So it dpeneds on what kind of horepower you are putting into it. I am pushing that 5820k with 2 970s, and a 4770k with a 1080. I fully expect to get a second 1080 in the future for SLI, and when I do, having newer a newer CPU could make a considerable difference framerates, especially since BF1 is a CPU intensive game.

Also, the 6800k may hold it value a little bit better in the case of resale.

5820k over the 6800k

Haswell-e also clocks better than broadwell-e

Coming from a 5930k user and there literally no performance gain from jumping from a 5820k to a 6800k trust me get the better and cheaper option of the 5820k
