What is going to happen if I put a RAM module with more mHz that the motherboard supports?

I am planning to buy some RAM from the local store, but it only has DDR4-2333 memory. My recently purchased motherboard can only have RAM clocked @ 2133 megahertz. What will happen, and what can I do to still keep that ram?

DDR4 usually defaults to 2133 anyway.

Ok, thanks!

It should run at the max the mobo supports.

depends on the board sometimes the board just wont boot at all with unsupported speeds  but that is rare these days most boards are more adaptable and like the others said will just run it at the next lowest speed that it supports

I lurk a lot

though, another thought of mine was to push the motherboard to run it at 2666-2333 mHz? Is this possible?

It will run at the official speed set by your cpu. On z170 and z270, you can enable xmp, which over rides it and run at the advertised ram speed.

I have a z170 board. Do I risk anything like damage or smthing or should i just go enable it and no worries?

There should be no worries, just enable it, but in some cases your cpu will be forced to run at constant turbo mode. Don't want that, adjust the ram manually in the bios without enabling xmp.

To see if your cpu actually forces turbo. Look at your default stock clocks  befor xmp. Then check again after enabling.

You will need to disable bios boot logo to see it.

I dont think it is gonna turo, but if it does, i believe that i will just leave it there, its a 6100 anyway.

If there is no turbo, then it might still oc a bit.

Worry about that later. Your just checking to see what its running at. It takes about 2 seconds to find out.
