What's the best AMD processor I can fit in my mobo

Hi guys,

 

first post and a bit of a question.  Last year I built myself a budget gaming PC using a a68 hm grenade motherboard with a A8 7650k black edition APU.

 

Now a friend of mine has sold me his GPU a GTX 970 for the princely sum of £50 (an offer I couldn't refuse) it's all in my PC and working but I was wondering that my apu may be bottleneck if the performance slightly and I was wondering what I could replace the A8 with.  The motherboard is a FM2+

i think you basically have one of the higest end ones there are for FM2+, time to swap motherboard and CPU if you want more preformance

If you only need CPU then Athlon X4 845 or 880K depending on your board being able to OC or not, since its A68 I got a bad feeling it wont OC much if at all... (Athlon X4 845 then)

Tbh I'd just hold out with what you've got and go for Ryzen or a low budget intel system

My APU was overclocked up to 3.8Ghz ran at 3.3Ghz (the bios has oc genie) are the Athlons better than the APU's?

I was thinking this, will the Ryzens use am3+? Or will it be better to spend a little more and get an Skylake i5?

Ryzen will be AM4 but we have no idea how it will compare to skylake in gaming.

3.8 should not be that bad if it has 4-Steamroller cores!

I get a buttery smooth 60fps on most games.  But is the A8 holding back the gpu? I might wait until Ryzen has reared its head.

The only major difference between...something like the A10-7870K and your A6-7650K is basically the GPU portion of the chip.

They are both quad-cores and have the same amount of L2 cache, etc.

You are using a GTX 970, so it makes no difference to you.

 

The Athlon variants are the APUs, BUT with no built-in GPU.

 

If you overclock your A8-7650K to 3.8 GHz ~ 4.0 GHz, you are already on-par with a A10-7870K.

Your A8-7670K is based on the 'Godvari' APU revision, so it is the best it is going to get for the FM2+ platform.

 

These 'Godvari' APU's are capable of overclocking much higher, 4.5 GHz ~ 4.8 / 4.9 GHz range, but your lower tier MSI A68HM GRENADE motherboard will/may be a limiting factor on how far you can overclock. I don't know if you are willing to spend extra to get a replacement motherboard -- especially when 'Zen' and 'Kaby lake' are supposed to launch within a few weeks, or so.

I'm going to stick with what I've got for now as it seems to be ok.  I'll upgrade the mobo and processor when we have more info about the Ryzen architecture
