MSI GT73VR Titan vs EVGA SC 17 1070 vs Aorus X7 DT V6

Hello Linus Tech Tips community,

 

I am looking for a new laptop and am currently deciding between the MSI GT73VR Titan, EVGA SC 17 1070, and Aorus X7 DT V6.  Could you guys please recommend which model I should get out of these three?

 

I have chosen these three because I wanted an overclockable i7-6820HK and a NVIDIA Pascal GPU.  I will be doing some gaming but mostly will be using the GPU for rendering and image design; this being the case, the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 are both so powerful and both exceed what I need a GPU for that I do not care which model I get.  Besides what I previously mentioned, the only thing I would like a fast CPU for is that I will be developing using Visual Studio.

Get a P870DM3 with a desktop i7 6700k. Failing that get a P670RS with a Prema bios to help OC higher without random throttling. Failing that get the GT73VR, it's the most quiet gaming laptop with a 1070/1080 to date. EVGA and Aorus offerings are a big nope.

I wish I did. I also post LPC, Dreammachine, Avell, idk should I get paid too? I say what's good. LPC wasn't in my recommendation list until they picked up good customer service and bios'. AW machines were on caution until Dell fixed a few thermal pad heights to reduce temps and reunlocked their newest bios'. Things come and go. 

 

And as for your point, I only recommend HID when the purchase is for a socketed machine. (or 17in 2.5k+ machines). I prefer LPC over HID for the average P6x0Rx series because I dont need liquid metal delid warranty on a BGA machine and I'd much rather not pay the $200 dollar premium on HID. HID's also one of the best Clevo builders around recognized on enthusiast laptop forums like NBR or TI.

I must agree with getting a P870DM2, and include the option of a P775DM3 instead. Since all you really care about is rendering, and the GTX 1070 is enough for you, the P775DM3 in CPU-heavy scenarios alone is likely to be a very cool and very useful purchase. I'd recommend HIDevolution and getting the delidded processor in the options for the 6700K.

 

I'd also suggest (or at least ask them to make an exception and sell you) the AUO 1080p 120Hz panel in the P775DM3. It has 94% NTSC gamut, and is extremely good (especially if you get it calibrated) for colour-sensitive work. Better than the normal 1080p 60Hz IPS or the 1440p 120Hz. If you rather do work in 4K, then the 4K panel (get it calibrated too) can attain close to 100% Adobe RGB, so that's also a good option.

Let me break it down for you as cleanly as possible. @Pendragon, @Dackzy, @don_svetlio and I will recommend to you the machine we feel is the best, based on what is asked. For the majority of the people asking on this forum, the answer generally defaults to Clevo. So then we pick the best rebrander shop based on the user's location. That usually ends up being HIDevolution in the US (or obscure european), LPC-Digital also in US, Eurocom in Canada, Dream Machines around Poland, and mySN/XMG for the UK and much of Europe.

 

Second most recommended is probably Lenovo's Thinkpads, for users that don't want to game too much.

 

Beyond that, maybe MSI for someone who maybe wants something thinner and is ok with lesser performance and acceptable stock cooling, or doesn't care to deal with Clevo's control center crap, etc.

 

At the top of the "we'll never recommend this" list, is anything Razer/HP/Acer, followed by ASUS (who gets some recommendations in lower end models).

Do you guys think any or all of these GPUs would be good enough to suit my needs: GTX 980, GTX 980M, GTX 1060 (I could get a notebook with a GTX 980M, 980 or 1060 for $1000 less than a 1070 one configured the way I need)?

Any of those would suit you... but isn't the CPU your concern?
