QuantumBit

Hi I always see those people on social media who which begins like "If you don't ___ I'll leak your IP." etc. Luckily this has never happened to me, but I always feared it might. What are some ways I can protect myself from this (Confidently)

Most likely people who say this are 10-year-olds who found out what DDossing is.

If you want protection you can use a VPN there a many free ones but if you want something good you would have to invest(Tunnel bear is recommended a lot on this forum)

Thanks for the tip :)

So something like tunnel bear will totally mask my IP? Like if someone tried getting it it would not be the real one?

All that shenanigans are just empty threats to compel tech illiterate people into doing their bidding.

What does saying I'm on a dynamic IP do though?

whom ever actually said that is a hacker wannabe who does not know the first thing about computer networking

If your IP is leaked, by default, there is no way someone can connect to you. If you have tinkered with your ports (for games most likely) still makes no sense. Finally most domestic services (unless otherwise requested) you will have what is called a dynamic IP (which will change every time you turn off your router)

Yeah, a VPN is designed to do that.

Oh ok, is there any way to check if I have a dynamic IP? Like does it say it on my router or do I have to check something online..?

Your router will tell you.  It will either say something about getting the IP from DHCP, or a static one being set.  If you didn't have to set an IP in the router when you got it, it's dynamic.

Look at the ISP tariff. If it doesn't say you have a static IP address, you have a dynamic one.

just go online to some page that tells you what's your IP, make note of it, turn off your router for ten seconds and turn it back on. Refresh the page that shows your IP address, it will have changed if your IP is dynamic

Yeah, the IP is mostly just the forward facing port from your modem or router, not your actually computer's IP behind.  Most modern routers utilize NAT.  Reason you can have multiple devices behind a router with a private IP range, yet still hook to the internet that requires a public IP range.  Also, a good router comes with a built in firewall too.  One rule of thumb, all ways have a deny all as final rule.

Filthy casuals with your single /24 block of addresses for internal networking. I use 7 different /24s in the 192.168.0.0/16 space :P

Most of the time that doesn't work anymore, at least in the states. A lot of ISPs are moving towards binding your MAC address to an IP address so you would have to change the MAC address presented to the modem to get it to change.

Yah, most consumer routers can't do it but when you're rocking enterprise grade equipment on your home network, it helps >.>

You can't do shit with an IP address unless you want to flood it. Unless you're big on YouTube or something, nobody will give two shits if someone posts your ip.

Never go with tunnel bear btw. Go with private internet access.

I second Private Internet Access, solid service.

Just because you have a Dynamic IP doesn't mean it'll change upon a reboot. Many ISPs give out DHCP, but unless the MAC Address of the router changes... your IP won't change. You could also leave it unplugged until the DHCP renews (signin to the Web Interface, and it should tell you when it will renew). I believe most ISPs use 3 day leases.

Yah, most consumer routers can't do it but when you're rocking enterprise grade equipment on your home network, it helps >.>
