i5 6600k or i7 6700k?

Should I buy the i5 6600k or the i7 6700k?

Im playing 1440p with a GTX 1070. I only need this for gaming and the very occasional video render.

Im leaning toward i5 at the moment, but then again it will become obsolete in 2 years...

6700k. Youre playing on a 1440p panel, youre playing on a GTX 1070, there is no reason not to go with the i7.

that's how components work, in fact it'll be obsolete the moment the next chip launches, beyond that it's a matter of how much you need to compensate for by havig the latest and greatest.

in terms of the differences between the two, there is a defenate move in games to more multicore optimization, so if you're worried about staying relevant, the i7 will get you a 10% edge, on top of which the i7 comes out the box with a higher clock speed.

clarify yourself on the "overclocked" bit? why does overclocking make a difference here?

Get the best you can afford, the i7 in this case.

You'll be playing at the ideal.

Why are you asking rather than getting the best you can afford.

The Skylake i5 should last you nearly 6 years until you need an upgrade, not 2. That's like buying a car and saying it needs replacing at 20,000 miles.

I'd say i7 6700k. If I was to buy a new PC in a few months I would wait for Kaby Lake, but old stuff is still powerful. You'll be fine for a few years. Look at how well the i7 2600k. Not as popular, but still kicks ass.

That's why I break mine twice.

If money isn't an issue then.. Why even ask that question. Obviously the more performance CPU is better.. and that's the i7.

6700k is faster. So the answer should be obvious.

Yeah going above 4 hyperthreaded cores you actually start losing gaming performance due to clockspeed limitations.

Don't want to blame anybody but you got it wrong. All of you. Period.

With that being said here is the obvious answer: Get the i7-6700K, not because it performs better, or is better value (which it is not) or can make your GPU neck in a bottle thing go faster or whatnot, but because it's made of rainbow dust glittered by pixies and running on baby seals rather than fancy PSU power stuff.

Also: I never make absolute statements for no apparent reason.

this is easy m8, get the i7. It gives you more room to upgrade you GPU at some point and well the FPS would be more stable in CPU intensive games.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

If money isn't an issue, then there is 0 reason to avoid getting the 6700k. in some cases you may experience no performance difference over the 6600k (such as some GPU bound games) and in other instances you can experience pretty significant fps increases (such as CPU bound games) as well as more consistent frametimes, and better performance overall when doing other CPU bound tasks like rendering

i am mildly sleep deprived, but anything that overclocking can do to a 6600k is also applicable to a 6700k so in essence "overclocking does not apply here"

Overclocking the i5-6600k and using it for 1440p gaming is the most cost efficient. A

To OP: if money's not an option, then why the fuck did you ask this question in the first place?
