SSD Choice

Hello,

I am thinking about buying an ssd for gaming/ video editing on the cheaper side and was wondering if there were any recommendations.

It's not about performance...

It's about longevity, quality, warranty, and write degradation.

 

Almost all SSDs have 500MBps read and writes...

Even the crappy ones.

You cannot notice the difference between 500 and 550MBps anyway.

 

The difference is that 24 months later your speeds will either be far below 500MBps or your SSD will be dead.

That's why I always recommend the 850 evo, it's pretty much the best SSD for durability at that price point.

Should read: You're paying for a controller as well as the NAND. The MX300 and 850 EVO perform very similarly when it comes to the scaling at queue depths beyond 4 calls, when mixed IOPS are needed, and when garbage collection and TRIM functionality are underway. 

Both drives sport similar warranties and both can survive well beyond 500TB written. You can continue to recommend the 850 EVO but with the less expensive MX300 around the choices should be MX or PRO for the better controller, warranty, and scaling.

Not saying the MX300 isn't good, but I am saying the 850 evo is 100% made by samsung with a great controller, several petabytes of durability, 3d nand, and awesome aesthetics.

I'm not saying it's wrong either. I'm just saying the PRO is the only one left at the top at this point in my mind if thinking about the EVO.

The pro just adds MLC.

A regular consumer will never notice the difference.

These are the EXACT same choices I'd make myself, and I've been building PCs for just over 10 years.

Yes it is, that's why I bought a pro, but for regular consumers who aren't writing tens or hundreds of GBs per day it doesn't really matter.
