Landlord worried about global warming I guess, why else no heat?

So upstate NY is a fairly cold place, that's fair, and winter is just getting started, but my landlord must either be Mr. Freeze or Al Gore because

 

THERE IS NO HEAT WHATSOEVER ON THE FIRST DAY SNOW WAS PREDICTED (but fortunately not yet observed)

 

Anybody else can't feel their hands?

 

Anybody else would absolutely HAND OVER THEIR WALLETS AND/OR BANK ACCOUNTS for a HEATED KEYBOARD?

 

RGB with your favorite switches, of course, =).

 

Vent with me. But don't let off steam, you'll literally freeze to death.

File a complaint with the landlord, as a tenant you have the right to a heated living space.

It is 70 degrees here where I am in NY lol. Tomorrow there is supposed to be snow though.

It's the damnedest thing, because living on the top floor (not a privilege in a walk-up) you would expect it might be the HOTTEST floor, but I swear the first floor is warmer.

 

Also, the heat frequently IS on, sort of, but so far noticeable LESS SO on truly cold days. He is a nice guy overall, gave us a random turkey for thanksgiving as a gift, but still, it would be nice if I COULD FEEL MY FINGERS.

 

Plus, today, touching the radiators should be fairly unbearable given my cold hands, but since they are currently ROOM TEMPERATURE/ALSO COLD it's a non-issue.

 

Overall I'd say it has been a fairly warm year in my area, with a wonderfully mild fall and winter thus far. . . UNTIL TODAY. Currently awful wind and rain.

 

Despite the tone of these posts, actually in a pretty good mood. The idea of pursuing tenants rights kinda gives me a warm feeling inside lol, thanks.

Shouldn't you be controlling the heat if you're renting it? That's the way it was at my apartment.

Oh, lol, that's what I forgot, to turn the heat up! Just kidding, but seriously that did make me laugh. Don't mean to be rude, it's a valid question, and as far as I am concerned the heat for the living space should always be in the tenant's control. If I push the heat to 90 degrees, just raise my rent or make utilities my problem to worry about.

 

No, sadly, the heat for the building is centrally controlled, to be clear, I do not have access to the controls or there would be no problem.

 

Have decided to make the free turkey, cranking the oven up will help (yes, my lease states that appliances may not be used for heat aside from their intended purpose, and also forbids the use of space heating devices. Candles are fair game though, and this place would best be described as a fire hazard.

GF has purchased an extensive collection of candles, unfortunately, they are of about 100 different and sickening scents. This place smells like a Yankee candle store is burning down. But things are warming up a little. Will be interesting to see if the turkey smell can break through.

 

She will probably kill me for burning them all though. Will have to remember to put some out before she returns.

I have been making that same suggestion for some time since she also lights them more for heat than one would prefer given the cost.

 

Thinking about making a Christmas gift of a large quantity of unscented varieties as a joke. Perhaps fake labels indicating interesting/funny but obviously not real scents.

 

But then again, gifts for others cuts into my PC upgrading budget. . .

find (unscented) brown candles and say theyre shit scented. hide all of the other candles and then no nose burning stench in your home

UPDATE: Pre-heating oven has the kitchen 12 degrees warmer than mancave/ice-cave/fortress of solitude space.

 

Move the entire rig/desk in there permanently?

 

Would have to bend physics a little to fit everything in there though. Bring up the console and noclip life.

As unfortunately mentioned, I am disbarred from the use and acquisition of such heating devices. The fact that the landlord can randomly drop by to drop off a free turkey/collect rent combined with the aforementioned inability to hide things well means not a great plan.

 

That said, so tempting.

I have been running every electronic of note here to generate some heat, but PC too busy for mining/folding/stress testing.

 

In my old dorm, PC on the LTT folding team was primary heat source lol.

Your landlord is honour bound by law to turn the heat on by a specific date (Often by November 1st, but it varies by State).

 

Why don't you just call your landlord... and... you know.... fix the problem

Just put a blanket over your hands. If you don't have it memorized you could sketch up or print out a picture of your keyboard.  

So yeah bundling up and maybe doing some fitness training would definitely warm you up. 

 

Also there are those hand warmer packets that are a chemical reaction so probably not banned.

Depends on the complex. Many apartment complexes have individual heaters, with a thermostat in each unit, allowing you to adjust your own heat.

 

Others use a central heating system, with the thermostat being controlled by management.

 

In my old apartment building, they used a boiler to heat the entire building, and would adjust heat automatically. There actually was a thermostat in my apartment, but it wasn't connected to anything lol.
