Apple drops the price of the LG 4K and 5K displays it announced last Thursday by 25%

Along with dropping the prices on all of its USB-C adapters accessories to help new MacBook Pro owners transition to USB-C more affordably, Apple has also introduced some significant price cuts to the 4K and 5K LG UltraFine Displays that were announced at its October 27 Mac event.

The LG UltraFine 5K Display is now priced at $974, a $325 price cut from its original price of $1,299.95.
The LG UltraFine 4K Display is now priced at $524, a $175 price cut from its original price of $699.95.

Under $1000 for a pretty great 5K monitor is a nice deal if you ask me. Be quick though:

The price drops on the two displays are labeled as "Special Pricing" and will last until the end of the year. Apple also plans to discount its USB-C adapters until the end of 2016.

You'll have until the end of this year for that 25% off.

That said, you'll either need a USB-C Thunderbolt 3 equipped MacBook Pro for this display, or a DisplayPort/HDMI to USB-C adapter for the thing to work. If you can find them.

Nice. A decent monitor crippled by proprietary exclusivity. Pass.

So TB3/USB-C is now somehow propietary? mkay.

Also, it's more than just "decent".

Anything with a tb3 port (or the appropriate adapters) should work just fine.

The requirements for the old thunderbolt display was also listed as a "thunderbold-capable mac", but it didn't require a mac to work.

Ah. Well alright then.

FWIW still not a fan of mandating adapters, but I suppose I could deal with that considering the price. Not that I will have the money for shit like this year… next year, probably.

In the long run usb-c everything will mean less adapters.

The tb3 port in the 2016 MBP works with first gen tb3 stuff in bootcamp, so it looks like there's some software issue going on -- probably some bug since I can't think of any benefit for Apple to intentionally block early adopter stuff.

How would it be incompatible with previous TB3 ports? There hasn't been any previous versions of TB3.

The 2016 MBP TB3 ports doesn't seem to work with TB3 devices that used the first generation tb3 controller (that's in early adopter accessories). However, since it works fine in bootcamp, there looks to be some software issue going on.

It sounds like there have been a bunch of issues with regards to the new MacBooks ports. There are reports of the Wifi cutting out when high power devices are connected (think external hard drives and the like). I'm with you in thinking the software is borked in some way.

I've used the new Mac and there wasn't any wifi/usb-related issues, and even Rossman didn't have an issue later on in his own video. So I'm not exactly sure what's going on there, but I remember there being a few cases with the Mac Mini that had wifi/usb issues and I'm pretty sure it had something to do with grounding/shorting issues or something.

Ostensibly, the only requirement is Thunderbolt 3 support, so any Windows laptop with Thunderbolt 3 should support it. I don't get why they don't have any Displayport connectors, because those should support 5k.

Because they're to encourage everyone to switch to USB-C.

Apple "partnered" with LG to produce this monitor. This monitor was specifically announced during Apple's keynote a week ago.

Given how little I now play games - I'd prefer a Mac with 5K.

A firend of mine bought one recently since it's the arguably the best monitor out there (at least has the highest pixel density) and he really needs them pixels. According to him, he can't go back once he started using it. It's that good. I have yet to see it personally.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.
