980ti vs 1070 vs Fury X

Hi guys,
I'm looking to upgrade my Sapphire 7970 Dual x. I'm still rocking 1080p, the 7970 is doing quite fine, but it's starting to show its age. 

FYI, I have an i5-4670k on a Z87-D3HP.
Now, I've narrowed it down to the 980ti, 1070 and FuryX, All 3 of them are around the 450 euro mark(including shipping).

As games are becomig more demanding, I think that none of the above cards are "overkill" for 1080p, and I like a bit of future-proofing.
Now, do you think that thr 4GB vram of the fury be a bottleneck? Since HBM is more efficient on higher resolutions(correct me if i am wrong).

The 6GB/8GB of the 980ti/1070 is enough i believe, but what are your thoughts between the 2?

Help me decide between the 3 please, unless there's another card that you believe it suits me better!

1070... there is no good reason to go with older components unless you can get them for significantly cheaper.

The 1070 is the best choice. It narrowly outperforms the other two, was released more recently and is more power efficient. The extra couple of gigabytes of VRAM can't hurt, either.

At full price, 1070. The 980Ti should be substantially cheaper now, especially used. For comparison, I recently got a new 1070 for £390 and a new 980Ti for £300 as they were being cleared. The 1070 is slightly faster than 980Ti overall, but does gain you the new tech and lower power consumption.

1070~980ti most of the time with the 980ti sometimes pulling away if the game favors cores over clock but it is a back and forth fight

 

Fury x is generally just weaker minus a couple scenarios

 

If it where me I'd pick the 1070 if pricing is reasonable or the 980ti if you can find a steal on its price (300ish dollars has been seen)

The only reason to get a Fury X is if you're also gonna get a 1440p 144Hz IPS Freesync monitor and then you'll be saving $200 in comparison (so that you end up paying less for the wonders of adaptive Sync).

 

Also consider an R9 Fury for the price of a GTX 1060 6G

Furies perform closer to 1070s than 1060s so the price is really good on this one.

Now, let's say i go with the 1070, what I have in my mind are 3 models, 1 from Zotac, 1 from Inno3d and 1 from Palit.
I've read reviews about all 3 of them and I see that they are perfectly good cards, with no difference to the other brands(MSI, Gigabyte, EVGA,)
Your thoughts on these?

I suspect they're all of a piece. The main concern should be the price, and possibly the manufacturer's warranty.

 

Don't discount the reference 1070, by the way. It's pretty good.

Avoid single fan card, choose a brand and color you like,

They all perform the same. I guess like Morgan said better check the warranty.

My point was really for the OP to not avoid the reference card, as some people tend to. 

 

As for the issues you raise, the FE is the same price here in Britain as other 1070's, even if buying from Nvidia directly. I agree cooling would be better on non-reference designs, generally speaking. I was surprised that my FE runs cooler and quieter than my ACX cooled 980 Ti, though.

that is because the 980ti is a much hotter card with factory overclocks, so it needs a lot more cooling... not really a fair fight lol.

Of course it's a hotter card. I was just surprised that the 1070, even when overclocked, actually runs both cooler and quieter than a non-reference 980 Ti even on the supposedly rubbish reference cooler. 

 

I don't disagree with your point. As I say, I was just pointing out that the FE isn't anything to treat like the plague.

Palit Gamerock. Support will probably just be subpar though.

Hbm performs great at higher resolutions. If you must choose between these go with the Fury X. However, if you can wait until Vega rolls around, the Rx 490/580/whatever fury card will likely have 8 or 16 gb of Hmb2, which is futureproofing in all respects.

On the reference blowers, I have a reference blower 980Ti, and a 1070FE. The 980Ti was borderline thermal throttling all the time with only the factory OC, which wasn't very aggressive. The 1070 FE is fine. Bare in mind the former is a 250W TDP card, the latter is 150W. That is a lot less. If we assume the blowers are of similar efficiency, the latter will have a lot more headroom. I think I read somewhere but can't check right now the 10 series blowers were updated more than cosmetically.

 

I deliberately chose the blower in my case due to it being a SFF box without great airflow, and I could use venting the heat not let it circulate internally. The 1070 FE at the time was amongst the cheapest cards available (£400 Zotac FE, lowest cost model was £390 at the time).

My vote is on a 980ti 

beats the fury and trades blows with 1070

oc like a beast and the top end cards have better build quality than a midrange card in my opinion 

but 8 vs 6 gb so ...

my cousin has a 1070 and I have 2 980tis

card for card I wouldn't swap him

I went for the Fury x over 980 ti and 1070 cause the differences in performance in games were minuscule and I have never been able to tolerate the fan noise from most GPUs, so having a water cooler built in was a pretty big sell. makes it easier for a crossfire setup in the future too cause in my MATX case those GPUs would be starving for fresh air... Also, HBM is pretty rad.

Easy. 1070. 8gb + power efficiency = win.

 

I wouldn't buy a Fury (X) anymore at all. It's a Memory cripple. There are already some Games, where 4gb is NOT enough on 1080p even.

And having fast memory does not help at all.

Fury X will be ok, as long you play Games in those settings, where the Game doesn't use more than 4gb Vram. Then it's great. If more than 4gb are used, 4gb will be a Bottleneck, Period. framedrops incoming

For example new CoD. With 4gb Vram you need low Texture settings, or you can already get framedrops.

Rise of the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex: MD, Mirror's Edge Catalyst. Games, that can break 4gb in 1080p. Not to mention higher resolutions.

 

980 ti > Fury X. Anytime of the day, forever (except you use a Freesync Monitor). 6gb is much more to work with.

 

Don't buy a 4gb Card anymore. You WILL regret it sooner or later.
