Verizon said Wednesday it is buying the technology behind Vessel, the short-form video firm started by former Hulu CEO Jason Kilar.

The telecom giant is acquiring Vessel’s product and technology, but plans to shut down the Vessel service.

 

I hope this doesn't mess up LMG's future.

Not surprised. It really was never a sustainable business which is likely why Verizon chose to shut it down

Well whatever. I suggest Vimeo. They have much better bitrates and my ISP doesn't throttle vimeo

While this is unfortunate, I can't say that I'm particularly surprised. They were trying to push a product into a market space that was already over saturated (or rather completely dominated by YouTube). There never was much of a reason to subscribe to vessel, as you really got no benifits.

Unlikely. They didn't release any exclusive content on vessel (except the nerd sports, which wasn't funded by themselves). They will probably just lose a valuable source of income, and have to find some new way to make up for it.

I don't think I'm going out on a limb here, but the Amazon debacle probably hit them harder in the pocket book than this Vessel mess.  They may not even need to go to some paid service at all.

they solved the amazon issue though. I just checked the video from a few months ago where they showed there income source, and vessel is listed as about 20-25% of there viewer driven income stream. While certainly significant, it is less then I thought. I'm sure they will still be able to survive without that income stream, they just might have to make a few adjustments.

Nick Light tweeted that Vessel is honoring their commitments and that they were stand up guys.  I can't imagine LMG is going to be get rocked by this that much.
