MSI R9 290 Gaming Edition overheating fix

Have you ever bought a GPU that did not have enough thermal paste applied to it?

Hey guys, so today I was playing Gears of War 4 on PC and I noticed that my MSI R9 290 Gaming Edition (overclocked to 1100MHz) graphics card was reaching 95c in the menus and 89c in game. So right away I though it was because of my overclock. I set the card to factory settings and was getting close to the same temps as before. Right away I had a feeling that something was not right with the cards seating or thermal paste. First thing I did was tighten down the screws and tried playing Gears again, still, about 90c. Next I decided to open up the card and take a look at the thermal paste. (This gpu is basically new, opened out of the box 4 months ago. Also, I never took off the cooler or messed with any of the screws, just popped it in and started to game)

Guys, I really wish I took a picture of what I saw. There was practically NO thermal paste on the chip. I swear there was maybe a tinny dab when it was applied at the factory. Like not even pea size.

I cleaned off what little was there and applied Noctua NT-H1 thermal compound and screwed it all back together. My temps dropped from 95c to 71c in the menus and from 89c to 69c in game. That is an insane difference.

I did have to screw through the VOID WARRANTY sticker but after a lot of research I found out that the sticker is a deterrent and the warranty is only voided if you damage the card itself. (do this at your own risk though)

I'm guessing that I just got unlucky when this card was manufactured, but I wanted to share this information just in case someone else is having this issue with the MSI R9 290 or other GPU's.

I've never had this problem with any other GPU's that I've owned but this leaves me wondering.

i think those warranty void stickers are actually illegal for the company to place, just that nobody chases after them for it. http://motherboard.vice.com/read/warranty-void-if-removed-stickers-are-illegal

Weird. All the GPU thermal paste issues I've ever had have been from too much paste, not too little. The die on my old R9 390 was practically swimming in paste before I replaced it.

Could be paste quality. Too much thermal paste really shouldn't negatively impact performance.
