A friend of mine has a pre-built, which has a dead motherboard just outside of warranty (figures). The board at fault has a form factor I've never seen called uATX, and I can't find any replacement FM2 or FM2+ motherboards (he has an APU)  with that form factor for a reasonable price. After looking at their mounting hole positions side-by-side, I think I should be able to mount a mini-ITX board in its place. Can anyone just confirm this before we buy a new board?

Yes it will, since it is the same thing.

Mini-ITX and Micro ATX aren't the same thing, but yes, an ITX motherboard will fit a Micro ATX case.

m stands for mini

µ stands for micro

u stands for "i dont have the µ key on my keyboard"

although, i do kinda sit in the field of "it makes no frikking damn sense that something called micro is bigger than something called mini"

Eh, as long as it gets the point across I'm not really a stickler for what prefix is in front of the formfactor :3

the prefix is rather important tho. although i kinda severely dislike the names mobo's currently have.

in fact, if i recall correctly there's an old standard (that has gone the way of the dinosaurs) called mni ATX, which is simply a more narrow ATX. (they call those ATX now as well, and it's mostly seen as a way of cheaping out)

A micro-bus is bigger than a mini-fridge.

The real question is - is there an ITX (non-mini) form factor.? :)

(Answer - yes, but nobody uses them any more.)

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

It is, but in general usage, sometimes it doesn't matter how correct you are, only that the other person understands what you're talking about.

It's like arguing we should be pronouncing Walther, the gun company, as "val-ta" since it's a German company even though in standard lexicon it's pronounced how it's spelled in English. Or that we should be saying aluminium instead of aluminum (a lot of chemists are only anal about it in formal writing).

but that's a bus and a fridge, while i do see the link with belgian busses, those are kinda not applicable in the same field :P

and as far as i know, here is no "full size ITX", adding to the bad naming schemes xD

Standard mATX is suppose to have 9 mounting holes, but there is also another form factor call flexATX, it's still part of the mATX specs, but slightly smaller.

Picky, picky.

A VW micro-bus is bigger than a mini-Cooper. Is that better? :D
