Any Paramedics on here? Thoughts on becoming a Paramedic early in life?

upliftsleet1974

As the title says I am looking into this career path and was wondering if any members on here are currently Paramedics?

What are your thoughts about someone 19 going to paramedic school?

I am currently an EMT and my family has been in the business for as long as I can remember. I do work part time on an ambulance as an EMT  and love it to death (No pun intended)

Thanks in advance!

I mean I'm sure it's a pretty solid career, and if it's something that you want to do, and something that interests you, fuck what everyone else thinks. Their opinion should have no weight on your decisions.

Why not become a nurse? Seems like the same kinda of work for more money.

EMT's are minimally trained where as Paramedics are highly trained medical professionals who are capable of a much wider range of emergency medicine techniques.  Here in Canada we don't even HAVE EMTs due to the insufficient training that an EMT recieves.  Here in you don't get into an Ambulance without at least two years of college in a paramedic problem where a B average or better must be maintained to even be certified.

It has crossed my mind. However, my sister-in-laws brother was an EMT and it is a rough job. You constantly think about death and here in the U.S. EMT's get paid your basic $9-$10 an hour. The doctors don't respect your opinions. It is a rough job. Right now I am sticking with phlebotomy and working in a lab until I get my degree in Respiratory Therapy.

I see that you are already an EMT. I wouldn't go further into that part of the medical field to be honest. If you like the energy and stress of emergency medicine I would try to be a ER Nurse or even Surgical Technologist if you are interested in the gruesomeness of the field. There is alot great reward and respect in those two fields than a Paramedic. I don't know why people don't take Paramedics seriously, but it seems to be the black sheep of the medical field.
